45 question??

ok i found 10 45 casings today. 9 said 45 AUTO and the other one says 45 ACP. when i was cleaning them i was looking and the casings looked expactly the same. so i looked them up in my maunal( modern reloading by Lee) and in that book they are listed as theis 45 ACP 45 AUTO, it says they are the same. my question is are they the same?? if you had a pistol that is chambered in 45 ACP could it fire 45 AUTO???? the book says the casings are the same in every way, if this is so, why two different names?

ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol, which was the original name for the round. Over time people have shortened those three words to just "Auto", and some manufacturers now use that short form. It is the same round.

They're the same, just different nomenclature. The correct name for the cartridge is .45 A.C.P (Automatic Colt Pistol), and over time it's also become known as the .45 Auto.

Good question.

Yes 45Auto & 45ACP are one in the same.

Yes. I have done so and there is no problem. They are the same cartridge.
