Just gave it a serious cleaning...it needed it badly. I'm hoping that was the issue....but I doubt it. :/

Look up 1911 extractor tuning and give it a shot. A new set of springs might not be a bad idea either. Your always taking a chance when buying a second hand gun, especially one that seems to attract so many kitchen table gunsmiths. Hopefully a little tensioning on the extractor will cure most of your woes. Make sure you are using proven magazines as well.

Wolff sells spring kits from that contain all the springs you would need to service your 1911. They're pretty cheap too, costing less than $20.

You should be able to find some simple tutorial videos out there on setting the proper extractor tension in your gun. A little pressure creating a slight bend in the extractor of your gun could be all that's needed to make it work right.

If those two things and a good set of magazines don't cure your problems, then you might have to look at little further into the gun to see what's really wrong. Someone definitely swapped some parts around on that gun in the past, and there's no telling what else they tried to "fix" while working on it.

It looks like Type II extraction issue. My guess is that you have improper extractor tension. You can test that easily. Follow this link:

If you cannot get the proper tension buy a new extractor and tension it and then test. A good way to test the proper tension on an extractor is to load 1 round into the chamber from the magazine. Drop the mag and then fire the gun with no mag inserted. Mags can help mask extractor issue because it will help support the case during extraction and ejection. If the gun can fire 7 to 8 times this way and if you get proper 2 to 5 o'clock extraction you should be good to go.

All that said take my free advice with a grain of salt. I shoot 1911s and love them to death but I am not in anyway shape or form a gunsmith or 1911 tinkering expert. Maybe if you are lucky 1911tuner will stop by and offer some thoughts.

Seems if all you have to pay is $600, and I'd try to talk the guy down to $500, given it needs some repairs, it would still be a good deal. Turn it over to a good 1911 smith and he can get rid of the function problems. Heck, may be only a magazine issue.

WVsig you've done it again! Thanks for the second link and the first too..but the second link did it alright! I'll post a pic.. I did what the man in the video is doing and the extractor has 0 tension! wont even grab the casing!

that should be it. I'm going to buy it now on Brownells. It's $30 some.

Did you try to re- tension it? Sometimes you can get it running by simply bending it. It often is a temporary fix but it works for some. IMHO a decent extractor is so cheap most of the time I just replace it.

You should also check to make sure it is not clocking which can also cause it too loose tension.

In the last pictures you posted of your slide there's a line on the bottom of the extractor tunnel, that's not a crack is it?

The extractor appears to need more radius on the hook and more entry angle, it would not hurt to cut an escape angle at the top if it don't have one.
I like to run about 16 ounces of tension on an extractor.

The radial lugs in the slide appear to be good so I don't believe the gun has a timing/breeching problem.

Does the radial lugs on the barrel look sharp or is there any flanging on them?

WVsig, I just bought one yesterday when I got home from Brownells, Wilson Combat. For $42 with shipping. Can't wait for that.

Hunter! I'll check out the gun again...I don't think it's a crack...I'm heading home now. Took a pic of the SA before I left with the same little casing test. Apples to oranges. Can't wait to get my new extractor and hit the range again with this thing

wanna do so much to it. That grip safety is driving me nuts -__- really don't like it. And it has that 4 spoke bushing. Blah...

I'll check it out when I get home. Doubt it though unless I might have overlooked it.

The ejector is fine. It's shaped funny. Not as strong looking and far out like my SA. I'll check how the Gold cup is and post a pic. The 79 series too.

As others have asked, why not try retensioning the existing extractor? If it's the original Colt extractor (which is a BIG "if" considering that a previous owner seems to have been enamored of Pachmayr and Millet parts), it's probably made of better steel than any replacement you can buy today.

Hey Aguila Blanca, yeah...that's true and all. About the previous owner and what not. I think the tensioning part to do so is just as if not more expensive than the part itself. And I feel as if that part going that bad once, it will again. So just bought a new one on Brownell's made by Wilson Combat which should be here sometime this week.

Really want to change out a lot on this gun

Skeletized hammer, combat trigger, flat mainspring housing, beaver tail.

Just need a competent gunsmith. I'm pending with one on the forum who will be remained nameless till all is said and done

It isn't gripping the round nice and snug like it should be.

Should I glue this thing shut and paper weight duty for eternity? Or maybe a fish tank ornament?

It isn't gripping the round nice and snug like it should be. Should I glue this thing shut and paper weight duty for eternity? Or maybe a fish tank ornament? What else would it be.
