Your favorite 44 mag recipe - Page 2

I shoot that heavy bullet in my Redhawk and a Winchester carbine. In the carbine it's kinda quiet.
318gr SWC-GC,
18.5gr IMR-4227(the original I've not used the new stuff yet) or 5-6.0gr Red Dot

Ideal 429421 250gr SWC,
9-10gr Unique or 5-6.0gr Red Dot(I actually use Promo instead of Red Dot now. I've not noticed any discernible difference when loaded to the same weight.)

I have 2 loads for my 44 mags, 10.0gr of Unique with a 240gr hardcast SWC or 19.5gr of ww296 with a 300gr JHP either a XTP or Nosler. Both loads are extremely accurate. I probably shoot 10 of the lighter loads to every heavy.
I used to shoot a lot of 8gr of unique loads until I got my 44 special.

19.0 grains of 2400 and a good hard-cast lead SWC gives me over 1300 fps out of my Super Blackhawk. Great accuracy.

For .44 Special loads, use that same bullet and 7.5 grains of Unique.

thanks for the info, I hope my new baby will be here this week, I was able to buy shell plate and set of hornady dies on ebay for decent price.

cabelas seems to be one of few places that has any brass in stock, still havent made bullet choice yet, still doin research on that

Winchester 240gr HSP and 15.0gr Blue Dot, WLP "both" primer. Right at 1300 fps from a 7.5" Super Blackhawk. Very accurate and more economical to load than the slower powders. No shortage of power and less recoil.

Purchased my first .44 (29-2, 8-3/8") back in 1975. A friend loaded his with 19.5gr 2400 under a 240 LSWC. Remington brass, CCI mag primers.
Worked great in his gun and in mine, too. Shoot clean through a deer, no problem.

Later took up the silhouette game. The same load was great on chickens, pigs and turkeys. For the rams, I went with Hornady 240 FMJ under 22.0 of 2400. Thinking back, I probably wasn't gaining much, but everyone at the club was running that load.

Ok another question, I havent ever loaded revolver ammo before only rifle, do you use a crimp die on 44 mag rounds or just set the seating die to crimp

You'll need the crimp die for the .44 Mag. Your die set will likely come with a roll crimp die anyhow.
