Dumb Question of the day ...

I just did buy my very first Range Bag ... now ... what the heck do I put in it. I always carry my firearms in a four gun padded case. I carry my ammo in an ammo box. And I clean and/or fix things once I get back home.

So ... what kinds of things do you keep/carry in your Range Bag?

Now that I have it, I may as well use it

Depends on what I'm shooting as to what is in it.

So excludung guns and ammo what I usually have in my range bag is:

electronic hearing muffs, extra cheap pair of regular muffs, a bottle of 50 pairs of disposable foam ear plugs, a stapler to staple targets, extra staples, packs of red and black dots from office depot, (can be used to make targets - just stick one on a sheet of paper or a paper plate, also can use them to cover bullet holes in a siluette or larger target), bandaids and neosporin, a pact shot timer, extra battery for shot timer, decks of playing cards for targets, balloons for targets, three pair of cheap shooting glasses, notebook, pen - usually just have one on me all the time anyway

What I sometimes also have in my range bag:

Chrony, front and rear sand bags and/or front shooting rest for rifle, pistol rest, binoculars (larger or smaller depending on what I'm shooting, belt for holster, various holsters.

I'm probably leaving somethings out - It does get heavy if you add 2 or 3 guns in hard or softsided cases and then ammo and extra magazines. I just bought my first aluminum 4 gun pistol case so I'll be carrying the weight more distributed if I taking more than one or two pistols now. Usually have extra cases to carry anyway if I'm shooting rifles - have five rifle cases - three hard sided and two soft sided that I switch out to carry whatever I'm taking to the range that day - though I rarely would take more than two or three rifles at one time.

I have a separate cleaning case, (a fishing tackle box that has all my cleaning supplies - well not all - extra bottles of cleaner or lubricant I store seperately). I clean when I get home.

I have an extra generic small plastic storage tub that if I have a lot of stuff, extra targets, sand bags, front rest, chrony, pistol rest and so on that I can just throw in the car.

Now my wife just got her first range bag - it has a small cleaning kit, electronic muffs, ear plugs, shooting glasses, extra battery for her red dot, a brick of 22 ammo, lubicant, Hoppes, and extra cleaning patches, with her gun in a hardsided case when she's ready to go.

Okay - now I'm too worn out from toting all this crap to shoot.

I also carry some of the hand wipe packets and a leatherman tool.

Sweat bands freshly washed (Hey I'm in Florida, it was 70 on Christmas.)

A rod for clearing pistol barrels in case of a squib.

I use a steel tool box with a lock.

My range bag usually holds my cleaning kit, some ammo, a couple pairs of hearing protectors, and not much else. Cleaning usually gets done when I get home, but the kit has some tools in it for "just in case."

Ammo, eye and hearing protection, stapler for targets, my screwdriver set, gloves. Most anything you need you don't can't carry or won't fit in a gun case. If you carry your lunch do't let your ammo mash your sandwich.

2. More eye protection (for taking buddies/chicks to the range)
3. Ear protection
4. More ear protection (ditto)
5. Staple Gun
6. extra staples
7. Shoot-N-C targets and stickers.
8. Multi-tool for fiddling with guns & scopes
9. Small gunsmithing/screwdriver kit for same
10. Bore Sighter
11. Can of white spray paint to re-spray steel swinging targets
12. Gun lube, like CLP
13. Stakes to stake down base of steel swinging targets
14. Binoculars
15. Tape measure and/or calipers (to measure group size)
16. Pen and legal pad (to record conditions, groups, etc.)

Things not in the bag:
1. Spotting scope
2. Spotting scope tripod
3. Reactive targets (steel swingers, baloon holders, dueling trees, clay pigeons, bag of charcoal briquets, etc.)
4. Guns
5. Magazines
6. Ammo
7. Sandbag rest
8. Lead sled & lead bags
9. Special muzzleloader bag with all components, if shooting ML.
10. Beverage/liquids (gatorade, etc.)
11. Paper targets

Since I am basically lazy, almost always shoot alone, and use a couple of indoor ranges with plenty of tools around already, I keep my range bag pretty light.

Eyes
Foam and electronic ears
Shot timer
Leatherman tool
Masking tape
Sharpie pen
8 spare mags in the inside compartments
A couple of boxes of ammo

Spare batteries, binoculars, etc. stay in the car

Some of the above of course and I really think its handy if you reload. I dump all the expended cases in one of the compartments which contains a plastic bag. Its a lot faster and cleaner than placing the cases back in to the ammo boxes

Never forget to take extra staples *downrange* with you EVERY time. Nothing like running BACK 200 yards, then BACK to the targets again whilst other peeps are waiting for your dumb butt to get finished, when your staple gun runs dry after 1 staple. :-(

Along with your range bag and your targets a small "target bag" you always carry to the target is a good idea. With your staple gun, extra staples, a pen or pencil, a roll of black and masking tape to cover bullet holes etc. and maybe a few stick pins just in case. Maybe a tiny measuring tape or I have a Leatherman 24/7 on my belt to measure etc. I also have some 3/4 inch or so diameter red stickies from a office supply to add to a all black target bullseye, or just a blank piece of paper.

Amazing the repair or targets you can make with some tape and a few stickies, when you've forgot your targets. HMMMM, wonder who did that?
