M1911 age & origin question

I have the chance to buy a very nice condition Model 1911 Colt. I am trying to find out more info on the age and if the gun was perhaps a commercial model that was remarked for the military.

SN is 4559xx. It is a classic 1911 with the short grip safety, long milled trigger with no relief cuts, very thin front sight and flat mainspring housing. Slide is marked with "Model 1911 US Army". The gun looks as though it has never been reblued (no parkerizing) as all markings are sharp: Rampant Colt hooves, lettering, all holes are sharp, etc. The frame is marked "US Property". The grips are quite worn, however they have the classic diamond around the grip screw.

Two small marks are present on the left side of the frame; On the left side of the frame, appox. 1/2" directly above the magazine release is a very small eagle's head with the number "S8" or "SB" below it. Also on the left side is the number "27", stamped at the junction of the trigger guard and the frame, just in front of the magazine release button.

There is also a "S" stamped on the underside of the hammer.

I appreciate any information or direction to a source of info.

Ranger1, based on the serial number you've posted the Colt 1911 you're describing was made in 1918. This should be a military Model 1911 made by Colt. The right side of the frame should be marked, "Model of 1911 U.S. Army" and the left side of the frame should have the following patent dates, "Patented Apr.20.1897. Sept.9.1902 Dec.19.1905 Feb.14.1911 Aug.19.1913". If this is the case in excellent condition it could be worth about $1,600-$2,300. Hope this helps!
