Tell me about 200 grain 10MM
I have been looking around at who makes a 200 grain 10MM round. Underwood offers the Hornady XTP? and a Nosler round. Reports on the XTP are not necessarily great at 10MM velocities and the Nosler round has minimal expansion from thew few Google searches I have done.

For a defense round, defense against two-legged critters, I'd be looking at any of the 200 at 1000 loads that most ammo makers offer.
Those loads don't make some 10mm fans happy, but they are much more appropriate for defense than the "magnum" stuff offered by the boutique ammo makers. Not sure what aspects of bullet performance you value most, but I place penetration just behind marksmanship in importance, and the XTP bullet is generally known to penetrate deeper, if at the expense of maximum expansion, compared to other bullets.

I've been alternating back and forth between Underwood Extreme Penetrators and Sig's defensive ammo (which is not greatly reviewed) depending on where I am going to be. I spend as much time in a position where the concern about four legged creatures such as mountain lion, sub 500 lb bear, and coyotes are the main concern.

Why 200gr?
Something like half of all 10mm loadings have a bullet weight of 165-180gr. Focusing on that range won't give up any performance for self-defense and simplifies finding a good loading compared to restricting the search to a weight range that makes up less than a fifth of all 10mm loadings. Edit: Ok, I was typing up my post when your comment about large animals posted. That makes more sense, but even with that criterion added, I think something in the 175-180gr range would still be more than acceptable.

I'm not in a position where I am tied to 200 grain. I would prefer it but can accept alternative solutions. I can make adjustments. I think my major issue is finding one that will both expand and penetrate (especially out of the shorter barrel of the G29). I went with 200 grain because it was where the design started and, if all things were equal (they aren't), I would prefer heavier over lighter.

I get good accuracy and reliability from 200gr Double Tap WFNGC Hardcast over Blue Dot. Haven't hunted with it. Yet.

Worked up a 200gr. load for my 1911 to use when Grouse hunting in the U.P. , mostly in case a black bear wanted to make a snack of my springer spaniel.
After the allure of the 10mm wore off I went back to a cast performance 265gr. gas checked WFN in my .45 Colt mountain gun, just seems to be a better tool for the job.

These will be available soon: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/97...oint-box-of-20
That is what I would use in a 200g load. |

I don't think 200 grain is necessary, 180 at 10mm speeds has plenty of power. Seeing as how you want to shoot it from a G29, I think the lighter, faster bullet will work better.

short barrel
I think the short barrel on the G29 will really handicap you regards velocity with anything but boutique ammo. I read reports of the G29 making 1200 fps plus with certain exotic ammo, but domestic stuff really suffers if all the text is true.
I read recently that Cooper wanted 1000 fps with a 200 gr slug, and the Bren Ten people upped the ante and we ended up with 1200 as the goal. I dunno if that is a true tale or not. Norma went on to load the 200 gr slug to near 1200 from the 5" tubes of the Bren Ten and the 1911. Norma also came out with a 170 gr JHP shortly thereafter. I have some early Hornady ammo that is loaded (well,....... at least marked) with 170 gr JHP. I think 180 gr got settled on as the .40SW came to life and the two rounds could share slugs. Personally, I'd drop to 180 gr, and if I could get velocities exceeding .40SW, I'd go that route. Should recoil less too. |

I think Cooper would have been happy with good stout .40 ballistics. Dickerson and Doorknob got the Magnum Fever, though, and Norma was glad to oblige.

I agree with Jim. I love the 10mm cartridge but wouldn't use it for home defense for the same reason I wouldn't use a .357 magnum to much blinding muzzle flash and it will blow out your ear drums, Much prefer the good old .45ACP. Big & slow is the way to go.
All firearms are tools, you have to pick the right tool for the job. Just ask the guy who tried to use a flat head screwdriver on a torx screw.

I agree with JohnKsa with regards to bullet weight for the 10 mm

Here you go ....
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/93...nose-box-of-20 A measly 20gns over your specified weight, but it hits like Thor's Hammer, penetrates deeply, and no one on the receiving end will be getting up afterward. |

I carry Uw 10mm 200 XTP in my G29. It'll do 1140 +/- fps in it. I have a 21# RSA to handle the power and tame the recoil.

I always thought it was 10 mm, 200 gr, 1000 fps.
My own tests [live targets] showed a definite benefit with big bore . The new Ruger should be interesting in 10mm .

My favored 4 legged (or whatever, woods) 10mm load is a 200 grain XTP at around 1200 FPS out of my 1911.
I suppose if i was going to carry 10mm for 2 legged, i'd use the same, as I trust the round and am used to it. |

I also have a 40sw and a 9x25 Dillon barrels for my G29. Carrying the 40sw probably will serve as an SD gun but no telling what kind of threat will appear. The 40sw out of the G29 won't have that much energy to stop a drug crazed outlaw biker.
The 9x25 Dillon on the other hand, is more powerful than the 10mm. It'll turn my G29 into a full house 357 Magnum. 1522 fps - 638 fpe. |

Of course, that particular bullet and load is intended for the handgun hunting of 4-legged critters, and likely the muzzle velocity is derived from a 6" barrel. Still, it's a decent "do-all" 10mm load for the woods and boonies from a 'mainstream' ammo-maker. |
