Mini 14 vs Ak 74

Since there are so many this vs that threads I thought the two rifles could be a good comparison. What would you rather have and why? I like the AK 74 the cheap ammo factor and the mini for how handy it is. I would guess the mini would be more accuate? I'm talking new production mini and lets say Arsenal Ak 74.

At the range...I've seen the Mini-14 eject spent shells at almost a 90 degree angle, that rains down on other fellow shooter's. On the other hand.. most AK -74's/47's, eject the spent shell somewhat forward right, except for some RPK's --- that eject at a 90 degree angle.

I have a Saiga AK-74 and a S&W AR-15 upper in 5.45X39...and like both of them. The Russian mill-spec ammo in 5.45X39, FMJ, though corrosive, is one of the most efficient battlefield bullets --- in terms of wounding statistics --- of all time, due to the hollow front tip of the FMJ. Whether the Russians deliberately built the bullet, to start tumbling after 1/4" penetration of animal flesh, is another question.

Most com-bloc factory AK-74s much more accurate than their AK-47 brothers and many are 2 moa rifles.

The 5.45x39 round was revised many times over the years. The 7N6 was indeed designed to tumble but at least 3 different versions to include the relatively popular 7N10 for various barrier/armor penetrating capabilities.

Mine ejects about 45 degrees up and 45 to the rear. I love it though, surprisingly controllable and accurate for an AK and $150 for 1080 rounds is dang hard to beat vs $400 for the same of .223

What's a range? My mini is used out in the real world, I don't care how far it flings brass. I'm the only guy at my range. I'll take .223 any day of the week.

I don't shoot on a public range-my personal range has only one shooting bench. The downside of the Mini is how those empties bounce around inside the pickup cab when you shoot out the window. It can be downright dangerous and way too many cases go into the defroster vents. I'm not sure where my 74 throws it's cases since I seldom look for them. As long as they clear the port, it's fine.

Mine ejects at about 3 o clock, but upward and hard enough to fly 4-5 benches down the firing line and rain on people over there.

EDIT: I should specify, my AK-74

I'd take an AK74, I've already got an AR in 5.56 I love that will do everything the Mini14 will do, only better.

The price of ammo is appealing big time. I wouldn't save any money, just get to shoot a ton more.

While it does seem to have cheaper ammo, a quick Internet browsing shows less of a variety of soft points an ballistic tips. But, it seems the necessary ones are available for the 5.45.

So the debate seems to hang on how far each rifle throws its brass, lol
