I really don't know much about guns, but I do have the opportunity to purchase the following for my husband for his birthday, and wondered if anyone could please let me know what the manufacture date and value is of it. I would really appreciate it.
It's a S & W 32 number 4 top break, # 185xxx for $250.
Serial numbers ran from 43406 in 1883 to 282999 in 1909.
Like most collectables, value depends on condition. That said, the book shows $200 for one in very good and ~$300+ in excellent.

Does It have a J prefix before 385xxx?

Not much info on that one. It is somewhere between 1962 and 1969. I would say it is a 1963.

No. Yours was made in 97. The lock started in 2001 with 60-14,15, and 16.

If it's a 5 shot "J" frame then ~1964/65.
If it's a 6 shot "K" frame then ~1920's.

I have a chance to purchase a S&W revolver. The barrel has "38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG", stamped on it, the serial number is 870XXX. The box is with it and I would say it is in extremely good condition. Any idea on value and manufacture date.
It's a 38 Military and Police, 4th Change. SN's ran from 241704 in 1915 to 1000000 in 1942. Yours is likely 1930's.
It appears to be in really good condition and the box adds value. As far as what it's worth, the book list $450 in excellent to $1200 in "as new in box" so somewhere in between.

Jim

smith and wesson SN lookups

Hey guys, i recently got some antique revolvers and wanted some help trying to identify them. I was directed here as a source of info on what these might be. Both of them are in working order, just need cleaned them and oiled them this afternoon. The smaller one functions perfectly, and the larger one would function perfectly as well, but the hammer pin has broken off on one side internally, so it still functions, but the hammer pin is only being supported by one side of the frame. These pictures are before i cleaned them up of course.

Story behind them is that my ex-cop father in law got these from a coroner back in the 60's when he was retiring. They had been sitting around the coroners office forever as they were all used in murders, and he gave them to him with some others. Included in them is a colt 1903, what looks like a S&W scofield 44 mag, and a black powder cap/ball gun that i have yet to identify.

There are 2 of them, here is what i know about each.

First (Larger): .38 Caliber i think. SN: 106218 Only other info on it is as follows.
Smith&Wesson Springfield Mass. U.S.A. PAT'D Jan17&24.65
July.11.65 Aug.24.69 July.25.71 Dec.2.79 May11&25.1880

Second (Smaller): .30 caliber i think. SN: 123046 Other Info
Smith&Wesson Springfield Mass. U.S.A. PAT'D Jan24.65
July.11.65 Aug.24.65 REISSUE July.25.71 May11.80 Jan.3.82

Pics are as follows.

Thanks for any info.
