Break Down of Threads

I think this site could be a great site but I feel it needs a few changes. I know this will be my opinion and probably get ridiculed for it.
I am a member of several gun sites and visit them at minimum once a day. I think the people on this site are really knowledgeable, but this site does not allow you to wade through the post's that you are not interested enough in. For example you go to the bolt action rifle section it would be really nice to have the different manufactures there, like CZ, Remington and so on. It would also be nice to have a rifle rim fire section and hand gun section, with manufactures listed under those section's, like Browning, Ruger and so on.
I do not visit this site very often because when I get here it is a little disappointing to me that, I feel the section are not a little easier to find and not broken down enough. I like the name and the thread lay out is really nice but it could be tweaked a little bit more and give a site like RFC a challenge.

Moving to Site Questions and Tech Support

A couple of reasons we haven't created lots of sub-forums & sub-sub-forums:

The more subforums that exist, the more the chances that people will post in the wrong one and the post will have to be moved.

Members often want as much exposure of their thread as possible and don't want it hidden down several sublevels where only a small subset of the membership will see it.

I don't have a problem with this sites format. Works fine and as I read through the threads I am exposed to new information and ideas.

We've discussed this kind of thing many times over the years, and we have always fallen on the side of fewer forums.

We are a general discussion site. One of our charms is that we allow quite a bit of leeway in discussion, especially when they are on more general topics, like what is the best rimfire rifle.

Once you start increasingly segregating discussion, you lose that character.

We have a search function that works fairly well. Google search is even more powerful for searching for particular topics.

Our model has worked well for us for 15 years, and I don't think it needs to be altered.

The problem is that we'd end up with 10,434 subforums, and information with a general appeal ends up getting buried in over-specialised subforums. For example, a general question about DA automatics would end up in the Handguns-->Semiauto-->German Pistols-->Post-1979-->Double Action-->9mm-->Full Size-->Aluminum Frame-->High Capacity-->Sig Sauer forum when it could just be posted in the general semiauto forum.

Even if the consensus led us to modifying our layout, it wouldn't be for the reason to give RFC a challenge. The philosophy of TFL is to focus on furthering 2A discussions, not to win over members from another gun board. RFC is a fantastic gun board and in no way do we intend to incite a competition to see who's the better forum.

Thanks for all the replies, I knew it would be a hot subject. I just always enjoying going to say a Browning section to read about my Buckmarks or say a S&W model 41 in the S&W thread. I visit approximately 10 different forums a day. I did not mean to imply that you would compete with RFC just like the way their site is set up. I am not downing this site, it was just a friendly suggestion and a thought. Most forums are, not every forum are set up by brands and so on. Maybe I am just not use to this set up and it will grow on me. I would have sent a private message to the staff and not posted it but I honestly could not find a contact staff link or anything close. I was not trying to make anyone feel I was trashing the site that was the last thing I would like to do. I would just like to see some changes, but as you can see I am pretty new to the site as far as replies and posts part of that is do to I would rather read about comments and guns that I own and not every make and model out there. I really appreciate all the staff that responded and thank you for the in site.

Posting your question here was the right thing to do -- as you see, you've had an assortment of replies.

Any time you want to contact a staff member directly, all you have to do is click on the name (we're the ones in bold blue type); we're listed on the next to the forums we moderate, at the bottom of the index pages of individual forums, and, of course, next to every post we make. One way or another, that will get you the option of sending a private message. Or, of course, you can do it the old-fashioned way by going to your private messages page directly, clicking "send private message," and typing one of our names in the "Recipient Username(s)" box.

To clear the air,

I honestly don't see where it was a "hot" subject nor do I see any controversy in your comment about RFC. I merely felt it was best to clarify the intent of TFL's coexistence with other boards so there's no confusion. Your questions/concerns were quite valid and posting them here was the right thing to do.
