.357 Mag, 158 gr JHP w/ Unique Fans ?
Does anyone else have a pet medium to medium heavy load ( 90 % or so ) they use in .357 magnum with Unique and the 158 gr. JHP ? Observations / velocity obtained ? Seeking about 1100 - 1150 FPS with this recipe from a 4 " Ruger GP100 . I've worked up to 7.5 grs, but still feels pretty mild, fired primers look great and cases almost fall out without touching the ejector rod. . Thanks

Hey, another Nebraska guy! I use 7.5 grains of Unique in a 4" Taurus. It's not light, but not even quite as heavy as Magtech box ammunition. My understanding is that if you want heavy loads you need to use a slower powder (like H110) with magnum primers. 7.5 grains of Unique is near max (my book states 7.7 as max). Somebody more experienced can correct me if I'm wrong.
P.S. I load my plinking stuff to 7 grains. I began having accuracy issues approaching 6.5 grains. |

What does your current load chronograph ? Alliant lists the 158gr JHC loaded with 7.8 gr Unique [max] at 1280 FPS in a 5.6" barrel. If you're not getting the FPS you seek you might want to go with a slower powder like Herco or Blue Dot.

I use 7.7 gr of Unique under a 158 gr JHP for about 1,150 fps out of a 6" revolver.
