Rate of Twist

How do I go about identifying the rate of twist of the rifling when the manufacturer refuses to, or is incapable of providing this information? The rifle that I speak of is a Winchester Model 70, 338 Win Mag.

Honest question to one who's gun activities are outside the mainstream: Couldn't you just measure it?

Measuring rate of twist.

Put a cleaning jag and a tight fitting cleaning patch on a cleaning rod and mark the cleaning rod with a felt tip marker.

Pull the patch through the barrel and watch the mark on the rod, when the rod makes a complete 360 degree turn, stop and measure how far you pulled the cleaning rod through the bore. The number of inches you pulled it through the bore is your twist rate.

If the twist is so slow or the barrel is so short that the rifling doesn't make a complete turn, measure how far the cleaning rod had to be pulled to turn 180 degrees and double the amount of inches.

Winchester openly shows their twist rate at:

They are capable of and do show this information.
