What Ammo for .250 Savage

I have a Savage Model 99 in .250 that I would like to use for whitetail deer this fall. Knowing how it is going to sneak up on me and catch me unprepared, I want to start looking into what ammo to use. I am open to all information presented, but would definitely like to hear people chime in if they hunt and have taken deer with a .250.

Just about any standard ammo will do. It's just a matter of what shoots best out of your gun.

I'd try a few different brands but I think the most common you'll be able to find will be Remington 100 grain Core-Lokt. I'd try it first and see if it shoots well in your rifle and then move on to more expensive ammunition if it doesn't provide acceptable accuracy out of your rifle. The little .250 is an under rated deer cartridge IMO.

My brother & I both started hunting with a savage 99 .250 & we both have shot more than a few deer with that combo. All I can say, it is a great WT deer caliber & stick with the 100gr bullet.

It shouldn't be too hard to stick to a 100 grain bullet - as far as I can tell the 100 grain Remington is the only factory 250 Savage load currently offered.

Winchester dropped it fairly recently, so there may still be some in the pipeline.

You're not only limited to Remington ammunition. Ventura Munitions carry 75-120 grain .250 Savage manufactured by HSM, and Reeds Ammunition will make you some for a reasonable price as well. There are other places that will help keep your old Savage shooting for a non hand loader, but the two I mentioned were the most reasonably priced.

The 250 Savage was developed using a 87 gr bullet traveling 3000 fps hence the name 250-3000 Savage.

I have a couple of Savage 99's one is a 250 Savage light weight take down model.
I do have some factory loaded ammo using 100 gr bullets but I've been handloading some Speer 87 gr Hot Core bullets.
I would be willing to bet any deer I shoot with my handloads using the 87 gr bullets will not know the difference between them or the factory loaded 100 gr cartridges.

The 250 Savage is an excellent, low recoiling cartridge for white tail deer hunting; it's really sweet when using a Savage 99 to hunt with.
