mosin nagant 7.62x54R for deer
Being that I'm strapped for cash, I picked out a Mosin Nagant to put on layaway. How accurate are these things? Would I be better off putting an aperture sight on it?

what are you getting? 91/30?
54R will easily take down a deer. in fact it will take down anything in north america. hope you get an accurate one. it's a crap shoot. but overall they are accurate rifles. |

7.62x54R is plenty powerful enough. Just make sure you're NOT using FMJ bullets when you hunt... I know this is common sence, but pick a good SP or HP bullet for your hunting round.
Cheap FMJ surplus rounds, and commercial hunting SP or HP rounds will probably have different points of impact, so be sure to sight in with your hunting rounds before you hunt. Good luck, and happy hunting! Wolfe.

My MN 91/30 using S&B softpoint 180Gr bullets is very good for shots up to about 150yds. Farther than that and I don't feel comfortable making a clean shot.
my MN 91/30 does 2.5" groups at 100yds. My reccomendation for getting a good MN is to save your cash. Pack a good borelight and go peruse a surplus dealer table at your next gunshow. I got a MN in excellent condition with a good to excellent bore for $79. (DarkSun Surplus)

Check the bore. If the bore is not good or crown is gone, ask to switch or look at a k98 (german) and hope for a Russian capture.

"...this is common sence(sic)..." Not to mention that hunting with ball ammo is illegal in most places.
"...How accurate are these things?..." The Moisins we had in the shop I worked in long ago and long before there were any Stateside, were dead on at 200 yards with surplus ball and the issue sights. There was no hunting ammo available then. It was a reload thing entirely if you wanted to hunt with one. Now, however, there is all kinds of U.S. factory ammo loaded with hunting bullets. If you're short of money, putting on a peep sight will cost you more than the rifle is worth. Get some hunting ammo and go sight in. Wolf, for one, loads a 200 grain SP. |

Yep it's a good rifle for game....
The ballistic chart puts this in the 308 department in general terms........ and we all know that the 308 is a great pick too........ Good luck....... I love my M-44 carbine (Romanian) it's going to hunt this years Whitetails in Michigan......
