Varmit Loads
Has anybody tried any of the Barnes varmit grenade bullets for a 22-250?
We hunt around some cattle from time to time and need a load that doesn't just pass through a coyote or a bobcat. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! |

HP Match bullets would work well. They do not have heavy jackets to reduce ricochets.
Other varmint bullets are designed in the same manner. Vmax, nosler ballistic tip, sierra blitzking as examples. I have heard the varmint grenades have problems with the slow twist of the 250 due to the long length. |

Not varmint grenades but I use the Nosler 35gr lead-free. 4435 fps from a 24" barrel, 1/2 MOA.

Hey Muscrat, what's the 22-250's twist rate?

I don't have any idea what the twist is. It's a win model 70.
I went ahead and bought some nosler varmit ballistic tip bullets in 55gr and loaded 33 gr of varget. We will see how that works. I'll also use it for deer hunting until I can get a different load for my .308. 168 gr hollow points don't kill very well. Sunday I shot a doe in the neck at 90yds the bullet exited center of the opposite shoulder and she ran about 125 yds. And sat down I had to shoot her again. |

A 22-250 loaded below starting loads with varmint specific bullets is NOT a deer gun.

Looks like you have varmint loads covered. Now for deer if you can not work up a .308 load just pony up for a box of CorLokt Remingtons. They still work and are cost effective. Use 3 0r 4 shots to get a close enough zero to go minute of deer with.

I got that load from my manual. The varget bottle didn't show a 55gr bullet.

Im also testing loads/bullets for my new 22-250 also. I tried the 55 gr. Hornady FMJ just to try because I load alot of 55 grainers for 223's but for my 22-250 and its twist rate. Lilja recommends a 50-52 grain bullet. with the 55 grainer I could at best get a 7/8 inch grouping and that was it. So now am waiting on a box of 50's from mail from Midway. Also trying Varget since I load so much of it and also gonna try 4064 and settle on the best accuracy on what my rifle thinks. also good luck to ya

Tried the 36 gr. Varmint Grenade in .223
I haven't tried them in a 22-250, but I have tried the 36 gr. Varmint Grenades in a .223 Remington, under 26.0 grains of Varget, for an average velocity of 3260 fps. They are devastating on prairie dogs, I would think that with the increased velocity in the 22-250, it would be even more destructive, and probably quite effective on coyotes as well.

I have shot Varmint grenades in a Remington 22/250 with 34.0 grns. of Benchmark for a velocity of 3,900 fps. and 5/8" groups at 100. Not quite as accurate as the same load with 40grn. V-Max, but plenty good for bobcats and coyotes. 36 grns. of Benchmark will get you a little over 4,100, but who needs it, and the 3,900 is a little easier on bbls.
The grenades will usually make jelly of a coyote's insides and does not exit with a gaping hole. I have a cousin that hunts and traps for part of his yearly income, and he swears by the Barnes grenade. Bill
