9mm semi for bug out bag

I'm selecting a 9mm semi for my bug out bag (this is not help for the caliber to choose, I have my reasons). Which will be rugged enough to last? A polymer handle or all metal? Thanks

Are you going to carry a long gun as well? If you are, I would recommend a Smith & Wesson Shield.

If I am looking at something to throw in a bag I am looking for something that works well at a reasonable price point like a S&W SD9VE.

So long as your bag is stored in a secure and reasonably dry place, almost any modern pistol of decent quality is going to be just fine. As with any stored gun, I personally like to take it out for inspection, cleaning, and fresh lubrication about once a year. That is, if you aren't periodically taking it out for practice. I don't know what you already own but I like to stay proficient with anything I might be using for defense.

Other than that, some good questions for selection include how it will be stored in your bag and how you might use it in a "bug out" scenario.

Polymer will typically be lighter than steel.

A Glock 19 will be the recommendation of many... for good reasons.

I would also look hard at the SD9VE. You are basically getting a Glock 19 sized gun that has stainless steel slide that can be had used for just over $200. Plus it doesn't feel like you're holding a brick. Throw in $20 for an Apex kit and the trigger is almost as good too. You can buy two used SD9VE's for the price of a used Glock 19 and you won't feel near as bad if it's lost, stolen, or damaged.

And BTW S&W is running a $30 rebate on a new one this summer.

If the purpose is explicitly a bug out bag, I don't think you can ignore the availability of magazines and parts of Glock pistols.

I would have to say Glock, too, for reasons of universality. 19, 19x, or 17 would be your choice, keeping in mind that the 19x and the 17 won't take magazines sized for the 19. (Talked myself into recommending the 19 over the other two with that thought.) Cover the trigger when in the bag.

G19, Smith M&P, Ruger, SR9, Sig 320, and probably several more. Pick one. If I'm more likely to need to bug in than out, but either way one of my Glocks would be in the bag.

I have a .38 special in my bug out bag but...if I had the money for something better, a glock 19 would be at the top of my list, even though I hate glocks and don't shoot them well. Dead nuts reliable and parts everywhere

9mm is a good idea, plenty out there. G19 is a good one, but maybe a G26. That way you can use G26, G19, and G17 mags.

The least expensive Ruger is the new Security-9, with an MSRP of $380. So actual price will be around $300, I'm guessing. It is an alternative to striker-fired pistols, as it is essentially a single-action only with hidden hammer, and a thumb safety that works well for right-handed people. I don't remember if it is an ambi safety.

The Walther Creed is, I think, a DA-only hammer-fired pistol and it is not selling for all that much. But I'd bet on finding magazines and spare parts to be much easier for the Ruger, years down the road.

My vote on the glock 19 or 17 as well. Your bigger concern is going to be parts availability or able to work in adverse unclean conditions for a bug out bag, glock wins in both of those categories.

You’ve got three posts seeking advice on purchasing a pistol, a .308 semi rifle, and a shotgun. And just reading them, it seems like you are either not very familiar with firearms or haven’t used them in a while.

I’d recommend getting some training, perhaps an NRA personal protection course or something similar? It might give you a chance to try some different firearms and see what works for you and your situation. People will be happy to give you recommendations but if the same thing worked for everyone, there wouldn’t be a bajillion different variations of AR15, let alone all the other non-AR15 rifles.

The easiest answer is "just about any 9mm sold in gun stores."

Easier answer is "whatever gun you have for CCW, because you'll be carrying it anyway"
