google is your friend:
http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Adam-12

They state models 14, 15 and 36.

IMGDB is great for finding which firearms are used in various movies, tv shows, etc

In the beginning, Model 14s.

But then the real LAPD transitioned to Model 15s
or had some 14s chopped to 4-inches.

So Adam 12 reflected the change to Model 15s which
were after a time rendered DAO. And a bit later on
the Model 67 was authorized/issued.

And yes, the Model 36 was the off-duty/backup gun.

Martin Milner's 15 and maybe before that the 14 sported
Fuzzy Farrant stocks; Farrant was with the LAPD and did
custom wood.

Milner's Model 15 with the Farrant stocks was auctioned
off from his estate not too long ago.

Don't forget those cool clamshell holsters.

Thanks for the link to the Cool Site ... I watched a lot of TV in the old days , westerns , cop shows , private eye , army and action shows and had lots of questions about the arms they carried ,
this can answer a lot of those questions...Appreciate it !

You can also type in a search for a particular firearm, and the database will list all the shows, movies, series, films that that gun has been used in!

Are we going to have a "Car 54 where are you?" sidearm thread too?

Interesting thread. As a child I watched that show and never paid attention to their sidearms.

Car 54 sidearms?

Since it was the NYPD, one may assume
they were Model 10s or Official Police since
they was carried since before Moses was
born.

I want to know what the Goobers on "Chips" carried. I don't think their pistols ever cleared leather!

CHiPs?

Smith 5906

as per the IMFDB

Despite similarities, CHiPs as portrayed in the
TV series were not supposed to be descendants
of the Keystone Kops.

Not a chance, it didn't even come out till the late 80s. IIRC they carried Colt Pythons.

The few pictures I could find from CHIPS show revolvers in their holsters.

Here's a link with a clear picture:

Can't vouch for the authenticity, but here's an auction that is supposed to be of the gun Estrada wore in the show. It's a Colt Python.

Ah, fake Japanese Python. Now I know why they never pulled their pistols.

Yup, the barrel is definitely not from Colt. The description mentions that the gun had a "blocked barrel" but that it was a real weapon.

I don't mess around with Colt revolvers to be able to tell if the rest of the gun is genuine Colt or not.

I was wrong in stating 5906s. Mistakenly took
info for the later CHiPs movie which IMFDB listed.

Looked very fake to me. The lines are all wrong, the sight and parts are all poorly fitting and most of all it is missing the Colt inscription just behind the cylinder. If it is a Colt Python it is the worst example I have ever seen.
