Savage Model 99 year of manufacture?
I just got a model 99. Serial number is 664486. Circle is unreadable. And anyone verify the year? I think it's a 1953

I believe 1953 started with 652,000 and ended with 720,000 so I believe you are right.

Is it factory drilled and tapped?? I'll have to check, but I think that started about 53 or so. The way to tell is easy, if there are markings over the chamber, with mounting holes drilled through, it wasn't done by the factory.
When Savage began factory drilling and tapping the 99 they moved the chamber markings from the top to the side of the receiver.

Could you please post some photos?
This should be a 99EG model, in .250 or .300 Savage. Great old guns. Drill and tap started at the factory in 1957. |

My 99EG in .300sav was serial # 699xxx and was made in 1954. so, probably not later than that. Although savage serial numbers were stamped, and then the gun was finished later. Supposedly some were earlier #s and were produced a year after mine, for example.
However, that wouldn't be normal- just not impossible. |
