NFA and moving

Say I want to buy a suppressor.

I get it, and later on I get transfered to a state that doesn't allow them.

What do I do!?

Can I store it with someone? Do I have to transfer it to someone?

I don't expect lawyer type advise, I just want to have an Idea what the ATF is gonna tell me when i call them later.

You sell it. The law isn't written so as to allow you to leave an NFA-registered item with someone else in another state.

You can leave it in another state if you are the only one that has access to it.
You lock it up and keep the key/combination.

444 is right. I'd put it in a safety deposit box, that is presuming you'll still get to go play with it. If it didn't look like I'd get to play with it much after relocation, I'd probably sell it.

Actually, yes it is. As previously stated, as long as it is locked in a container that only the owner can open, it can be left with a friend or relative, put in a storage locker or safe deposit box. Only stipulation is that you must inform ATF of where it is being stored.

Storage of NFA Firearms

To avoid unauthorized transfers, registrants must store NFA firearms so that no one else has access to them. Firearms may be stored at locations other than the address on the firearm registration form, such as a safe deposit box. However, unless the registrant is a Federal firearms licensee who has paid the special (occupational) tax to import, manufacture, or deal in NFA firearms, the NFA Branch should be notified in writing of the new storage location.

You won't get much money on a used suppressor. Their value tends to drop like a rock partly because if you sell it to someone out of state the the $200 tax has to be paid TWICE. Once to get the to the dealer, and again to transfer to the buyer. If you manage to find someone in state to buy it you can avoid the double tax.

Hell, I bought a brand new M4-2000 mod. 08 (newest model) for $700 unfired just because the buyer couldn't complete the process. That's a $200 drop in value and he hadn't event taken possession of the suppressor yet.

Best idea is like what has been said before, lock it in a safe deposit box for $15/year. You never know how the laws are going to change so after ten years it may just skyrocket in value and that $15/year investment will really pay off.
