Would you still buy a Remington 870 Super Mag?

I am about to buy a Turkey/Waterfowl gun, and I want the 870 Express Super Mag (Bottomland camo).

I have had some Remingtons, including a wood stocked Super Mag, and they were all great.

However, I have read a LOT of negative reviews as of late. To be frank, I can't spend more than about $450 and I want a camo model.

What do you guys think?

My other options seem to be a Mossberg 535 or 835 combo.

Mine shoots awesome. never have any problems. Mossbergs will do the job to but at kick a hell of a lot more. 870 super mag has never let me down. You could by a used 11-87 to...

Looks like you have read most of the concerns and negatives about the Express models. Most are factual and don't think that many folks went out of their way to bad mouth them. Given that, they are still good enough to buy as long as you know what you may have to live with. If I were looking for the item you mentined, I would include the Express.

My buddy just got one. He took it all apart and cleaned it real good. He took it out and ran 125 shells through it with no issues.

After owning my express, the only Remington shotgun I would buy, would be an older Wingmaster.

My negative experiences with current production 870s have only been with Wingmasters, the expresses have been fine... GO FIGURE!!!

All the Expresses,IME, work. I've handled and shot maybe 20 or 25 in the least couple years. Some of those have been Super Mags. No probs to report.

I don't know about new production.
I know when I shuck an 870 hulls fall out.
Mine is a Magnum (3").
For Turkey....835 is better.
The Overbored barrel just can't be beat.
It is not even fair to compare.
For anything else I would go with Remington.

Recoil in pumps is the same when you compare apples to apples.

I just bought a super mag and on the first 100 rounds it functioned flawlessly. The next time I took it out with different ammo and it refused to eject or let the bolt come back. I'm just chalking it up to that ammo not liking the gun

Late season geese. That is what the 3.5s are for. By the time the geese get all the way to VA they have been shot at A LOT. The 3.5s give you that little extra.

If you decide to go with the 870 Super Mag, check your local Walmart. Mine has them in 12ga/26" barrel fully camo configuration for $327 + tax.

I believe it is Realtree Hardwoods HD. I know it is not the Waterfowl pattern.

Thanks. I went by there, that's a great deal.

I could have saved some money, but I do like the pattern I'm getting (Mossy Oak Bottomland) and the one I'm getting comes with a turkey choke and an "Over Decoys" choke. So I should be ready to go.

Had I seen the WM one first though, I may have bought that one. It looks decent although I don't like the tan shades in the Hardwoods HD.

I would take an 870 magnum, my buddy has the 3 1/2 chamber and every once in say 20 shells he was to grab the grip and slam her on the ground to eject a shell. I dont see why anyone would put up with this when a 500 or 835 or 535 is alot cheaper and is always hassle free, just my opinion

Like I have mentioned before on all the threads talking about the 870s....my buddy just bought a new 870 Express Super Mag. He is newer to guns so asks me a lot of questions. I told him to break it down and clean it. Then when he thought he was done clean it again. He uses MilTec 1 on his guns. He does that because that is what I have been using for years. The first time he took it out he put 125 Remington clay loads through it and didn't have a single issue

I use G-96 brand clp and never had any issues hot or cold weather.
The only problem i've had lately is finding a barrel clamp that doesnt push the barrel and the 3 round mag extension apart on my 870 any one had that problem?

i have had mine for over 15 years and its never let me down. as far as im concerned its the best pump shotgun you can have. im sure others will disagree but..........

Well, I didn't buy a Super Mag. I picked up a standard 870 Express ShurShot from Academy. It has the gray laminate stocks instead of the brown laminate.

I got the 26" barrel because I just don't like 28". The fit and finish on this gun is at least a 9/10. I really like the looks of the wood on this particular gun, and I usually don't like any laminate stocks. The metal finish is uniform and the roll marks are crisp.

One thing to note, the receiver does not say Express, it simply has the stylized Remington 870 on the left side. It also comes with a standard safety (no J-lock) and a complete set of Hi-Viz sights.

Very happy with my purchase. I put about 10 turkey loads through it yesterday with no issues, no rough chambers, etc. I know people have had some issues with Remington QC as of late but this is a fine specimen, especially from a box store.

I have five 870 magnums and plan to get a few more. However, I will never get a 870 supermag. They are just to easy to jam.

I don't care for the Mossberg 3.5" guns either as they don't seem to balance right IMHO.

If I felt the need to shoot 3.5" shells I would get a Benelli Nova.

I have shot several hundred 3.5'' shells out of my supermag over the past 15 years and i cant recall ever having one FTF or FTE. That includes buckshot and turkey loads. Maybe there is something wrong with your shotgun.
