re Ring shaped powder

Hello, I remember reading several years ago about a smokeless powder
that was ring shaped and was made for antiquated cartridges so that it filled the casing better. Does anyone know who makes this powder?

IMR Trail Boss.

Works in a lot of applications, not just for cowboy action shooting any more.

Marketed under the IMR brand name.

It is a very useful powder for reduced loads in pretty much any cartridge.
I've used it in .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R, .327 Federal, .44 Mag, .243 Win, .270 Win, .30-30, .30-40 Krag, and 7.62x54R. None of them actually required a light load.

What use did you have in mind for the powder?
It's not suitable for black powder firearms.

I thought about loading up some .45 colt for my Hawes for general shooting as a couple times with some other powders it hasn't fired right away and was told that sometimes the powder settles below the primer. I haven't had the problem using magnum primers and Win. 296. But just looking to try something
and maybe get into cowboy shooting.

I've never seen Hawes listed when talking about high pressure .45 Colt loads. Are they good for 30,000+ psi?

I had a manual years ago that was lost in a housefire that had load data for using the 296 in a Colt SAA I contact several reputable gunsmiths in my area
and was told what ever can be safely put through a Colt can be put through a Hawes. So that is what I did and it worked with no problems for over 20 yrs.
However I don't have the data I used then, but I believe I was using about 14 grs. of 296 with a light crimp. She roars and works well on deer these loads also worked well in my 94 trapper!!

Colt SAA's and their clones aren't typically rated for the "Ruger Only" loads you see and H110/W296 really isn't appropriate for the lower pressure stuff.

The Trail Boss loads will work fine in your gun. Many other powders are good too. My favorites are Unique and Universal.

I wouldn't even try to develope a W-296 load for it if it's a SAA clone.
