I just bought a Remington 870 12 and will soon pick a magazine extension kit for it.

How do you remove the internal spring retainer at the top of the magazine tube (under the thread-on cap). I thought it just turned out, but it doesn't appear to be threaded. There is a slot in it and I can see the end of (I assame) a plug to limit its capacity to 3 shots (a legal requirement where I am for hunting).

Thanks for the help.

Rick,
you should see an indention on the magazine tube that holds the retainer inside the tube.
simply push the retainer down into the tube with a large screwdriver and align the slot in the retainer with the indention and then let the spring push it out coming by the indention it should come out easily.

Note that those little indentations will need to be removed by your gunsmith to get the extension to function properly (i.e., no shells will go past them).
