Mec-Gar 15-round mags for P228

Awesome. Just awesome.

You probably know that Mec-Gar manufactures the OEM 13-round mags for the SIG P228. The same company also makes aftermarket 15-round mags for the same gun. I recently ordered three and they came in today.

They fit flush, and the dimensions and quality are the same. At a glance they seem exactly identical to the 13-round mags, but on closer examination they can be distinguished by the capacity indicator holes.

Well, the really nice part is that the only discernible difference in the 15-round mags, is the plastic follower. When I disassembled one of the mags to check it out, I found that said follower has been shortened and narrowed to accomodate the additional 2 rounds. This means that the follower is narrower than some parts of the magazine, which is not the case in the 13-rounders, but I just shrugged this off as there was no real way around it design-wise. The mag spring is slightly different in keeping with the slight design change and to create the proper tension for the two additional rounds.

Overall these mags are top quality (hey, it's the same company) and they function quite well (I haven't got a chance to actually shoot the gun with these new mags, but I have rapidly and repeatedly unloaded them with my thumb without any problems.

If anyone has a 228 and would like the capacity of a 226... these mags are the ticket.

I picked up a couple from AZ Gunrunners, as well as a couple 17 rounders for my 226. They work great, and what's not to like about two more rounds in either fine SIG

Yeah, the 17-rounders plunge the 226 into "truly good capacity" territory.

17 rd 228 mags

I bought some x-grip spacers and use my 226 17 round mags in my 228. Fit is awesome! I still have to order the flush fit 15 rounders to keep the grip length short. Here are some pics of my 17 rounders...

I have 4 of them and I love them. 2 are old german 15 rounders with wolff rebuild kits and new followers from brownells (the smaller versions) which allow me to fit 16 rounds with slide closed or 17 rounds with slide open. My new 17 round mec-gars will fit all 17 with slide closed with no problems.

Tony.

Just to clarify....

Maybe the last sentence threw you for a loop. Mec-gar doesn't make a 228 17 rd mag. I use my new 226 mec-gar's with new X-grip spacers to make a 228 17 rd mag.

The x-grips are available from cope's or brownells.

Cheers, Tony.

Mecgar mags

Stratus.. At one time, the 9mm mags that fit the P228 Sig, fit my P229 sig. Do you or anyone else know if the 228 mag in .40cal, will fit the 229 Sig .40? I belive that Mecgar Mags come factory with Sig pistols?

The 228 only comes in 9mm hence there are no 228 .40 cal mags. I beleive that the 229 mag is slightly wider allowing the increased capacity for the 40 but any 228 mag will fit in a 229 but be a little loose. The 229 mags won't fit in a 228.

The 229 was designed off the 228 but with the high pressures of the 40 in mind which is why the slides are milled. There are no stamped 229 slides. After Sig designed the 229 for 40 they opted to make it available in 9mm with the milled slides

Do a search on the sigforum and there are countless discussions on what mags fit where in which sigs and the EXACT differences between the 228 and 229

Hope this helps. Tony.
