Camping in California

I plan on doing alot of camping with my family in the future. Is it legal for me to take my handgun with me for self defense or in case of animals? I wouldn't be carrying it with me. But it would be around in case of emergencies. I know if I looked around I could probably find an answer, just thought this might be quicker

Calguns has a thread for that: Firearms in Forests and Parks.

It's been in existence for quite a while, so there are lots of replies, but the first post has the essentials.
