9mm +P+ Reload Data
Where can I find data on reloading a 9mm for use in my Rugar PC4 rifle? It fires regular reloads just fine, but since it is rated for +P+, I'd like to do up some hotter loads in 147gr bullet weight. It feels like I'm shooting a .22 with the 115gr or 124 Barry's.

There is no standard for +P+
+P is 10% over standard SAAMI max, which is 35,000psi, so +P is 38,500psi. +P+ is more than that, how much more, there is no standard.

I guess the actual beauty of the +p+ rating than, would be I could load to the max powder weight without much worry. My normal habit is to always stay 10% under max.

If you are talking about Berry's Plated bullets, I would be careful how fast you are trying to push them. They really are only made for mid power loads (under 1200 fps, 1450 if thick plated).

Thanks for the advice on the bullets. I cast my own for various cowboy action guns, but figured with my 9mm carbine, would be best to use plated. May be a good idea to use my friends chrono and see what the velocities are with various test loads, since the barrel length is 16 inch. I did not know about the Barry's being soft.

I heard that pistol powder meters good and takes up a little less physical space that unique. Will try some and see.

I like Power Pistol in .380 and .40 (I don't reload 9mm yet). It's a little snappy, and I get a lot of muzzle flash, but I think that's mostly because I'm using it with short-barreled pistols. But I get accurate loads with it, and it meters well.
Most of the recommended PP loads are significantly heavier than loads using other powders, so it's probably not as economical. |
