Gun Control Bill Gains 185 Co-Sponsors in the House
Rep. Peter King (R-NY) has introduced the companion version of the failed Schumer-Toomey-Manchin bill in the House. H. R. 1565 "The Public Safety and Second Amendment Protection Act." This bill currently has 185 co-sponsors - and when you see who is signed on, it should be clear this bill does not protect the Second; but attacks it. The bill is 33 votes short of a majority in the House. While it is unlikely House leadership are feeling suicidal, you might wish to contact your Representative - especially if they are one of the co-sponsors below:
COSPONSORS(185), ALPHABETICAL [followed by Cosponsors withdrawn]: (Sort: by date) Rep Andrews, Robert E. I was scrolling through the list and I noticed "AS" and "MP" listed as states, is that a typo or did I miss something?

It was assigned to the House Veterans' Affairs committee back in April and doesn't appear to be gaining much steam. Of course, that doesn't mean it's not worth keeping an eye on. If your rep is on that list, writing them now would be a good idea.

Apparently "MP" means the Mariana Islands and "AS" means American Samoa.
I don't think these guys have a binding vote, it's mostly symbolic. |

Of course it's called the "Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act of 2013." I suppose that's to remind us of the wonderfully successful "Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act."

I'm sorry, my apologies to Texas. Whenever I see the term "public safety" I can only think of the French Revolution. Scary stuff. Just sayin'. And speaking of Texas, that's quite a blue list of names. Sorry to see Texans on there.

Thanks for the heads-up, BR. It's very easy to forget about theset things in the middle of all of the holiday hubbub that goes on.

King is a supposed 'conservative' from NY. Not to be political but it shows that labels cannot guarantee behavior.
In a similar vein: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinio...809_story.html This campaign manager argues that gun control can be winning issue if it presented correctly and to the right population groups. Emotional arguments are the basis of much voting.

If Feinstein, Schumer and others that automatically add a toxic tone to the discussion stay silent this might have the potential to become more of a problem.
Just my thoughts. James

Hmmm, the guy in the Post story had a candidate who eked out a 165 vote win, which is currently subject to recount - and he did so in an election where every other up-ballot D candidate won by a larger margin and he thinks this is evidence that gun control is a winner?

HR 1565 is meant to be a friendlier-sounding version of S 649, which was the failed Senate bill mandating universal background checks. While HR 1565 claims to exempt private and temporary transfers, that language can be easily yanked out at the last minute. There are plenty of legislators who plan to do just that. So, tl;dr: this is a potentially awful bill dressed up as a unicorn princess with low moral standards.

Another politico article that says Gun control advocates aren't getting much.
Playing around with plastic guns is their best bet. http://www.politico.com/story/2013/1...612.html?hp=r7

Assuming House Speaker Boehner invokes the Hastert rule of refusing to bring a bill to the floor unless it is supported by the majority of the majority, this one is dead in the water.
Better keep an eye on it anyway. |

As far timing goes, I would much rather see it now. With the support for the current administration in a nose-dive It's likely dead in the water. IMHO it is much easier to sell the " on the fence" law when things are on the uptick, support can be had more easily, and "Joe Public" has the alarm on snooze.

They have not even gotten all 200 of the Democrats in the House to co-sponsor the bill.

Wow
Not a shock that these lawmakers want to pass new laws from behind their desks....this is whats wrong with the lawmakers these days...they should ask for the help of law abiding gun owners and sportsman alike before they turn this country into anything but free

Yeah the usual suspects are listed, no new surprises here.
