Gun Control Bill Gains 185 Co-Sponsors in the House

[Bartholomew Roberts]

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) has introduced the companion version of the failed Schumer-Toomey-Manchin bill in the House. H. R. 1565 "The Public Safety and Second Amendment Protection Act." This bill currently has 185 co-sponsors - and when you see who is signed on, it should be clear this bill does not protect the Second; but attacks it. The bill is 33 votes short of a majority in the House. While it is unlikely House leadership are feeling suicidal, you might wish to contact your Representative - especially if they are one of the co-sponsors below:

It was assigned to the House Veterans' Affairs committee back in April and doesn't appear to be gaining much steam. Of course, that doesn't mean it's not worth keeping an eye on. If your rep is on that list, writing them now would be a good idea.

To be honest, I don't think gun control really had much to do with that. McAuliffe didn't win so much as Cuccinelli lost. Neither was an appealing candidate; McAuliffe was just a little...less unappealing.

That's actually a dangerous question to ask, since the devil is in the details with things like this. Terse summaries can be very misleading. For example, the official summary for HR 1565 is,

To protect Second Amendment rights, ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and provide a responsible and consistent background check process.

Let's not forget that the 10-year ban on so-called assault weapons was titled as the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act. Put it that way, and it sounds harmless, right?

HR 1565 is meant to be a friendlier-sounding version of S 649, which was the failed Senate bill mandating universal background checks. While HR 1565 claims to exempt private and temporary transfers, that language can be easily yanked out at the last minute. There are plenty of legislators who plan to do just that.

So, tl;dr: this is a potentially awful bill dressed up as a unicorn princess with low moral standards.

Assuming House Speaker Boehner invokes the Hastert rule of refusing to bring a bill to the floor unless it is supported by the majority of the majority, this one is dead in the water.

I just love how some of the worst laws to hit this country misrepresent the actual law "BY NAME". Even to name some of them could divert the thread topic, so enough said on the point. Misrepresentation by misnaming is misleading. It likely will never change though.

As far timing goes, I would much rather see it now. With the support for the current administration in a nose-dive It's likely dead in the water. IMHO it is much easier to sell the " on the fence" law when things are on the uptick, support can be had more easily, and "Joe Public" has the alarm on snooze.
