Mossberg 930, want to replace spring.

On a Mossberg 930, if you want to replace the mag tube spring, you have to pull the retainer or unscrew the tube.

Is the magazine spring retainer necessary?

Once removed does it need to be replaced?

Will the cap stay tight without it?

Isn't the magazine spring retainer there so the spring doesn't pop you in the eye if you remove the cap to swap barrels. Other than that, I think you can do without it.

OK, I can mitigate for that.

If that's all it's there for and the cap will tighten down adequately without it, it should come out for sure.

Wrong, it is there for the detent(two fingers poking up thru the retainer) to keep the magazine cap tight.

I read over on the mossberg forum that people removal them regularly.

You can remove it, but in order for the cap to stay tight, the retainer needs to be there.

How often are you going to take the spring out? Maybe once a yr to clean if that often.

I just want to replace the spring with a better one from Wolff or Nordic. I'm not too impressed with the stock Mossberg springs.

So if I pry it out, I can press it back in? Don't want to booger it up coming out or in.

Yes, the spring in there will last for yrs, trust me. You are not getting better quality on it just because it has some one else's name on it.

The only reason to swap would be if you wanted to modify the magazine capacity.

Then, you will see that those aftermarket springs with the end not properly crimped/curled cause more problems than the factory spring. The factory is square, they just cut the aftermarkets wherever and they cause feed issues. The follower tilts and binds if you don't square up the new spring:

I respect that the ends of the springs on the factory mossberg are shaped properly whereas the Nordic springs are just cut raw.

However, I have replaced springs in other mossberg shotguns and found the Nordic springs to be much higher quality and stronger springs. The photos you showed don't match my experience of the Mossberg spring being thinner and the Nordic thicker.

When dealing with Mossberg though, I know things can vary widely.
