Springfield 5100 Double barrel shotgun

Hey Harley,

What can you tell me about my 5100? All I've been able to find out is that they were made in the 30's and 40's and are basically 311's. Mine has no serial number, but has a heart stamped on the underside of the receiver. Is that a date code? Mine is in nice, unaltered condition with most of the case colors remaining on the receiver and the stocks are nice walnut. Just curious. Thanks

The only thing close to what you are requesting, that I have, is the disassem on the 311. I lack the knowledge on the markings. If you want the disassem on the 311, if you'll provide an email addy I can send it.

As per Side by Sides of the World by Charles E. Carder there was a Springfiled Arms Co.
"It was a trade name used on Cresent Fire Arms Co double shotguns until about 1920 or 1921. This trade name was used by J. Stevens Arms Co. after 1920."
It sounds as though this company produced private label firearms for a number of different retailers and was bought out by Stevens. Don't know if they are related to Springfileld firearms or just have a similar name (common practice back then).

I'm pretty sure Stevens bought Springfield. Mine has Springfield and Stevens on it.

It has been my understanding that the 5100 series shotgun was the forerunner to the Model 311. Also, I know the Savage/Stevens/Springfield Model 5100 was offered with Tenite furniture along with natural wood. I don't know this to be true of the Model 311. Hope this helps!

Stevens bought out Crescent and used the Springfield name until it was discontinued in 1948. The 5100 is the same as the 311 and the 530. The 315 is the same as the Riversides which Stevens also bought out.

Hey all,
If anyone would have any doc. on the assembly/disassembly for a Springfield-Stevens 5100 double-barrel side-by-side 12-gauge shotgun, I would really appreciate it. I just recently inherited this shotgun from my Dad and have refurbished it. Just having a problem getting the dang thing back together. This gun is similar to the 311 from what I have been reading online.

I know this is an old thread ,but I also was in search of info on a Springfield by J Stevens 5100 20 gauge with 28" barrels. I'm trying to find out what the chokes are. I can't find any marking indicating the chokes anywhere

Just a side not when the term furniture is used on double shotguns it is discribing the metal trim parts not the stocks

IIRC, although Savage/Stevens didn't mark the chokes on many of the shotguns they produced, they standardized the SxS chokes by barrel length.

In 12/16/20 ga, AFAIK:

26" bbls = IC/MOD
28" bbls = MOD/FULL
30" bbls = FULL/FULL

I think the .410 choke setups might have differed.

Any Savage/Stevens, manufactured between 1949 - 1968 should have a small circle with a number and letter stamped between the trigger and the hinge pin.
The letter reflects the year of manufacture.

A to N = 1949 - 1961
P = 1963
R to V = 1964 - 1968

The Model 311 has been in production since at least the early 1930's - the Model 5000 it's precursor, not the Model 5100.
The Model 5100 was a Model 311 variant.

The "Springfield" brand was used by Savage until very recently (I bought a new Springfield Model 187 .22 in 1966 for Christmas) - and always on their lowest grade price leaders, generally manufactured for bulk orders.

I bought a springfield 5100 reciever a few days ago
it has letter H in a circle followed by m m 1 on left side
on the right side of the reciever is a square stamped in the metal about
1/4 inch from the breech face.
On the bottom below the pin is stamped #7
any idea what these markings/symbols are/mean?
The receiver appears not tohaveeen used much no markings
of shell heads on the breechface and the case coloring isreally good.
