Would you cut a barrel down?
The two heirloom shotguns I have are 16g. As far as value, they are worthless. One a Winchester Model 12. 29" barrel, full cylinder bore choke and not a lick of bluing. My grandpa shot many a squirrel and rabbit during the lean times to feed my mom and grandma. The other is an H&R Topper 48. The H&R I simply carry it in the truck for camp varmint. I want a HD shotgun and was wondering if I should leave the Model 12 alone and keep an eye open at the local pawn shop for a 12g or 20g pump. I have hunting 12g and 20g's. Maybe I should try my hand with the Model 12 in the dove field and leave the old hunter intact. What about cutting the H&R down?

I'd go get a mossberg 500 with a 18" barrel or find an 18" barrel for one of the 12's you have already and leave the old 16's alone.

Agreed- leave the M-12 stock. Shoot it, for sure, but leave it stock.

Don't cut them, go and buy a Mossberg 500, they can be had the way you want. What you have now is family history, don't destroy it by cutting them down.

Count me in the don't cut it crowd.
Used or police trade-in guns are plentiful and inexpensive.

I won't. I'll stop by the pawn looking for a 500 or 870. I'd leave the barrel alone and buy a short one. It could also serve as a back-up for my Beretta on my trips. Now that I think about it a 500C comes with an HD and a hunting barrel for sub $300.

You know the 500C is a 20 ga right?
The letter denotes the gauge with the A being 12, B=16, C=20 and so on...... Edit: read your OP in that you are looking for 12 or 20.
