Dimensions of trap range?

Guys,

A friend of mine is thinking about setting up a "trap" range (skeet shooting?) on some property of his. What dimensions and layout would you recomend. He doesn't want to rain down 12 gauge pellets on the neighbors if you know what I mean. This is for personal/noncomercial use.

Trap uses one machine, skeet uses two.

The heaviest load and largest size shot allowed for ATA trapshooting is 3 Dram Equivalent, No 7 1/2. The pellets are falling out of the sky at 742 feet, nearly 250 yards, according to Journlee's formula. Our trap and skeet club's past president tested that limit by going out under a sheet of plywood and seeing how far he could go and still hear the pellets falling on it. Pretty close to the formula.

If your guy sets up a machine in the south 40 and informally shoots larger shot and/or heavier loads, it will go a good deal farther. South 40 is not far off. I once read that a combination (trap and skeet) field, perfectly laid out, requires a minimum of 37 acres to keep all the shot on the property.
