remington rifle sights question,,,

Why is the rear sight on a remington in the middle of the barrel?

Would not it be much better closer or up against the reciever?

This way you would have a longer sight radius and it would be more accurate.

Why does remington make them this way? The other companies do not.

Their shotguns have much longer sight radii

If they put their sights any further back, folks would take them off in order to mount their scopes down where they ought to go. And if they took the sights off, then they would have nothing to fall back on should their scope poop out.

And I might as well say it before somebody else does. I know what you're saying about sight radius (distance between sights). Longer is better, but it doesn't make it any more or less accurate. The rifle is as accurate as it's built, the sights just help the shooter to employ said accuracy.

Another thing...With them on the barrel they go with the barrel. If you want to change it out for a 26" bead sighted barrel, no problem. If the rear sight stayed on the receiver, you probably couldn't see the bead.

not on the reciever, but on the rear of the barrel like a mossberg or a benelli.
