IMR 4831?
I am looking for some feedback on IMR 4831 powder. Reading through my new Hornady reloading manual, this seems to be the powder that they recommend for .270WIN and .30-06 Springfield. I have been using H380 for the past year on my .270 Varmint loads with great success, but I’m always interested in improvement. Any input that you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! Joel |

I love it. One of my favorites for 30-06 and 45-70. A bit hard to find in my area. I'm out and been trying to find a couple pounds at my haunts for a couple months now.

IMR 4831 is good for bullets 180-220 grains but is a little slow for lighter bullets. Probably the most popular IMR powder for 30-06 would be IMR 4350 which would work for your .270 also.

IMR4831 is now my "go to" powder for my 7mm Rem. Mag. that I shoot in my Savage bolt action rifle. I started using H4350, but wasn't satisfied with the results, so I switched to the IMR4831 after some research. It is extremely accurate and gives great velocity. In my Savage 116 I get 3/4" groups at 100 yards with 162 grain Hornady SPBT's. That's plenty good enough for my needs.

I use IMR4831 in 6mm Rem, 6.8X55, 270, 280, 30-06, 300Win Mad, & 338. It is the not only the most accurate in most of these cartridges, it is the most accurate and the fastest.

I used IMR 4831, Hornady 180gr SP, Winchester case and Remington 91/2 primers with this shot I too today.
Fell on Top 30-06 If I wouldn't have fell on the rifle; I may have hit the moa sized target. As far as I can tell, it is fairly temperature insensitive. |

Well, I guess I'll just have to find a pound and try it out. I have had very good results with the H380, but as I said, I'm always looking to improve my groups.

I to have had good luck with IMR 4831 in the 270 Win. 25-06 Rem, 300 Win Mag, 7MM STW, and some in a 243 Win with 100 gr bullets but haven't had much luck with it in 30.06.

What bullet/weight will you be using. IMR 4831 does not do well in bullets 120gr and under. It does very well with 130 and up.
