installing a longer eye relief scope
I have a model 70 Win in 338 win mag. It is Serial number G19XXXXX.
I am thinking of installing an extended eye relief scope on it. Something like the Scout rifle system. I would like your thoughts. 1) Is it feasible without major modification. 2) What type mounts do you recommend. 3) Type scope. 4) Range will be 300 yards or less. I love the rifle. It fits me. I have a 1.5 to 2 inch drop in my shoulder. Unfortunately, due to shoulder injuries I cannot shoot full factory ammo. I am developing loads which reduce the recoil but still make use of the big bullet. Thanks for your help. |

You can buy a combination of parts that will move the scope quite a bit forward from the standard location, but not as far as a Scout type arrangement. Use an EGW 1913 rail for the Mod 70 and then an offset mount to move the scope even further forward. The EGW products I recommend without reservation, the Leapers/UTG mount I have no familiarity with... just linking it so you get where I'm going. The potential problem with this method is that the scope height will be more than what you have.

Like that mount. Allows you to use your peep sight.
Thanks for the advice. |

FWIW - XS Sights makes.sells the Clifton Scout Scope Mount (takes Weaver-type rings) for commercial rifles @ $60.
http://www.xssights.com/index.php?nI...ID=scopemounts The mount needs to be ordered by barrel diameter over the chamber (see drop-down box), and may need fitting. . |
