stevens 620

somebody gave me an old stevens 620 12 ga. i planned on having the 30 inch barrel cut down to 18 1/2 inches . it seems to be a very solid gun for home defense. i dont understand the loading process. the slide has to be back to load the rnds? i have never used a shotgun that operated like this. is this normal? wasnt there a riot version of this gun? did it operate the same way? is this gun up to the job ?

the action can be closed to load the gun. it is a pretty good shotgun but you can't get any parts for them that I'm aware of which is why I haven't shot my dad's 620 in probably 25 years. there was a riot gun version made. there might be some collectors interest in the riot gun version but it would have to almost brand new in the original box and that is not likely. I doubt there is any collector interest in the hunting version at all except for maybe as a parts gun. my opinion would be to leave the gun as is and just buy a Remington 870 with the 18 inch barrel.

the tab that holds the rnds in the tube pulls back when the slide is forward.if you load the rnds action closed there is nothing to hold them in the tube.

I don't have any dummy loads to try but I'm pretty sure that I had loaded the gun with the action closed. maybe a part is broke or missing on the gun.

Gun Parts Corporation carries almost all the parts for the 620.
http://www.e-gunparts.com/

Gun Parts also sells an exploded view of the Stevens 520-620 series guns for $1.00:

The Stevens 520 and 620 were used by the Military during WWII, so you will probably be able to find a reprint US Army ordnance repair manual for it.
