there is one bad move and that is standing at head of stairs and saying "whos there" Milton, Mass. home owner heard noise and got his 22 rifle
empty gun and stoot at top of stairs an called whos there.shot took him thru chest and killed him.
as stated get to secure room or stay where you were and let the intruder come to you.

To me this reinforces the value of a light as part of your home defense plan. I prefer mounted lights on my "closet" guns: a G17 and pump shotgun.
