Looking at close-up photo of Indian soldier,(Janes Defense Weekly, 27 Sept 2000) using a rifle that is a cross between AK-47 and FN FAL (yeah, also called L1A1 & SLR). AK receiver without right side selector/safety lever. Rear sight at rear of receiver cover. FAL-type fold down handle. Built-in grenade launcher. Clear plastic, slightly curved 20 round magazine, holding what may be 7.62x51mm rounds. No operating handle on right side. Anybody know the history and name of this rifle?

Sounds a bit like a Galil. Could also be a Valmet which served as the basis for the Galil if memory serves. Made in Israel.

It is the INSAS (INdian Small Arms System). Ishapore has been working on it since the mid-'80s, but there have been major delays in the program. The INSAS is chambered in 5.56x45mm; however, there is a slight variation from the NATO standard. As you've guessed, it is a mix of FN FAL and AKM features with a pinch of HK thrown in. Strangely, the buttplate is supposedly the same as used on the Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mark III.

Yup, you guys pegged it. That's the bullet launcher that I saw in the photo, and now I know much more about it. Now I need to look it up in Janes. Thanks.
