Want a new 1911 for around $1000.
I have always wanted one, and think it is about time to add one to the collection. I do not want anything from springfield lower than the range officer. I am open to all brands, but would prefer it not have an external extractor. I really like the sigs, but the external extractor is ugly. Just want some of your opinions. O yeah 45acp pref. but will consider 9mm. Please don't thrown in other styles of guns. IE BHP, CZ75 etc.

The STI Trojan is about as good as you can get for $1000 IMO.

I know the Springfield Operators are around $1100 at my local shop. I think they are gorgeous.

Well- for "around" a thousand you can get a Dan Wesson Heritage or Guardian, if you shop around. I've looked at them and the quality is superb. And they have fantastic triggers and lots of good Ed Brown parts .

Any particular purpose for the gun? Home defense, concealed carry, range use?
My preference in the sub-$1000 area is with Colt. The original and still one of the best, with less MIM than other manufacturers and abetter resale value. Just about everything but their Gold Cup's and Special Combat Governments are under a $1000, and they have models that cover just about everything from classic, to modern, to tactical.

Kimber has many nice pistols in your price range. One you might consider is the "Eclipse". You can get one in the 3" 4" or 5" models. They have a little more weight to them due to the all stainless slide and frame. I have an Eclipse Pro (4") that's been 100%, and I think they are the best looking 1911's Kimber makes. If you want something lighter they also make many different models with alloy frames.

$1000 should get you any Colt 1991, XSE or Series 70 pistol of your choice. If you can find one, it'll also get you a WW1 replica -- MSRP $999.

i like the
Springfield opperators or champion models. I think there are many good manufacturers of 1911s for that price like springfield kimber colt smiith. Sti but what is it you are looking for? The best thing. For you to do is shop around see which one feels the best in your hands and what will. Serve your purpose best. For a great warranty I would go springfield just my .02

STI Trojan or save another $100-200 and look for a used Valor or TRP.

1911 9mm: Kimber Target II, STI Trojan, STI Spartan.
Kimber Target II - have been very happy with mine. Accurate. Easy DIY tuning of the extractor fixed out-of-the-box FTEs. STI Trojan - still new to me but so far has been as accurate as the Kimber and have been reliable with no function issues. Chainlink front strap felt sharp at first but when shooting, it is not very noticeable. I think checkering would feel better than chainlink. STI spartan -- don't have one but seems to be worth considering at approx $600. .45 or 9mm --- I would pick 9mm because of cost and recoil but i am thinking more target/range shooting than defensive uses for the pistol. Also, on my STI Trojan, small part of the thumb safety hole on the frame shows when the safety is engaged. I was told that this is normal. I have since search for images on the net and have found many to be the same. Just be aware. |

I prefer Springfield but in that price range you really can't go wrong with a Springfield, Colt, S&W and even Kimber.
For the money though, I'd take a look at the Springfield TRP. It's a bit more but it's a fine gun. I'd start shopping and see what you like from each.

Colt 1991A1. I have the all stainless commander. Has shot right of the box perfectly. All types of ammo. I paid $809, a couple of years ago.

I'd look to Smith & Wesson, STI or Springfield for supplying a good 1911 for ~$900 new.

For "around" $1000, there's a whole lot available, depending on how flexible that "around" is, and especially if you're willing to consider used. The big question I have is what the intended use is going to be.

Colt's Government Model 45 ACPs do as good a job as any IMO - top one original made in 1970 and bottom one a "repro" made since 2002 - which I bought some seven years ago for $900 - priced them last week at $930 -
Only mods - larger sights and lower thumb safeties.

Colt Combat Elite or Colt Govt 70 series or Colt Govt 80 series.....
If you are willing to push your budget to $1200 then look at the Dan Wesson Heritage line.

Oh yeah I forgot to ask... What are you using the gun for? Target only, gun games, concealed carry, home defense or a mixture of any or all of the above.

A vote for external
Too bad you are against the external extractor. My Gov. sized Smith is crazy reliable and their entry level line 1911's are reasonably priced.

STI Trojan
Colt Combat Elite Springfield TRP (or Range Officer on the other side of "about $1000") If "collect" is important, than I'll second the suggestion of Colt Series 70, or one of the WWI 1918 replicas. |
