varsol...?

I bought about a quart of varsol recently to clean the soft top on my sons jeep,( removed goo left over from duct tape I put on) still have better than a pint of it left, does anyone know if it is any good as a cleaner for bp or any gun for that matter, my only concern is will it take off blueing? has anyone out there used it?

Varsol is basically paint thinner. It can be used to make Ed's Red bore cleaner for smokeless guns but I wouldn't use it on bp. It won't hurt bluing but it will remove the finish from wood.

thanks, just trying to find a use for it before it dries out. there has got to be some difference, paint thinner, rubbing alchohol, turpentine wouldn't take the duct tape goo off, varsol turned it to a sort of hard silicone gel that just rolled off.

Hillbillie:

Varsol is very close to paint thinner. Both are petroleum based. Alcohol and turpentine are vegetable based. Kerosene is one step down from Varsol. If you want a really potent solvent, get LACQUER thinner. This will dissolve almost anything. I also notice that gasoline doesn't seem to clean stuff as well as it used to. Probably that ethanol crap they are adding to it.
Gun Scrub is a very good cleaner too, but watch out around plastics.

Varsol is a mineral spirits brand name. It's sold for cleaning paint brushes and as a degreaser. It won't hurt bluing, but it won't clean BP or smokeless well. It's great for removing cosmoline though. Doesn't dry out.
