I built this Commander clone in 1975. I've added a few touches like the beavertail, but most of it is 36 years old. It's had 12,000-15,000 rounds through it.
I used it one year in pre-IPSC "combat" matches and won the state and regional titles. It was my #1 carry gun for a few years. It's very reliable and feeds everything. |

Evolution of my Glock 21 into the world's first G20/21L.
I started with a stock G21 in 2004 and found a custom steel 6" German 45acp slide (melted Bo-Mar, forward cocking serrations, etc.) for sale at Lone Wolf. I bought it along with a custom blued steel Jarvis 6" 45acp barrel to create a longslide length 'G21L'. It shot great and I loved the balance of it. Muzzle flip, even with hot 45acp+P was non existent. I developed some hot handloads for it that really came alive in the longer, 6" barrel. With a 28% longer sight radius and better sights, it was also very accurate even out to 100yds. However, I got the 10mm bug later that year and after some fit and extractor testing, I contacted Kevin at KKM Precision and we discussed him developing a custom 45-10MM stainless steel conversion barrel for it. He agreed and so with some G20 mags I assembled the world's first G20L in early 2005. With just a barrel and mag swap, I had a heck of a rig and the blued 45acp vs stainless steel 10mm barrels made it easy to tell what caliber it was set up for. I called it my G20/21L. The performance increase I achieved with my 10mm handloads was really significant, yet the 4¾ oz heavier slide and barrel really tames the 10mm's recoil. Using a slower burning powder, I was able to develop two hot 10mm loads that were still very controllable. The felt recoil it developed was almost disappointing .... almost. With them, shooting our 200yds steel plates with regularity using just a 2 handed standing unsupported grip became common for me. (That would really get people's attention at the range!) I regularly shoot both of these loads through it for some dazzling performance. These loads give me slightly better performance than the smaller and lighter hot Double Tap 158grn 357mag loads out of a 6" revolver. 165grn 10mm @ 1,503fps develops 827ft/lbs of muzzle energy! 180grn 10mm @ 1.423fps develops 809ft/lbs of muzzle energy! Over the years, I swapped out the Bo-Mar front sight for a Dawson FO one but other than that, I just shot the heck out of it. In 2008, I decided to set it up as a USPSA 'Limited' class shooter and had the steel slide hard chromed, added a magwell, added +2 mag bases, rounded the trigger guard, and further refined the trigger job. I still shoot both 45acp and 10mm in it and it still turns heads at the range. As a G21L 45acp: As a G20L 10mm: When I'm out in the Rockies, I remove the magwell and load it up with 180grn hardcast 10mm. Its comforting to know I've got higher performance level 10mm ammo plus 3 times the capacity (17+1 rds) of a 357mag revolver ready at my hip. Now that Lone Wolf makes a stainless steel longslide, anyone can copy my pistol or just build a G21L or G20L for themselves. Its a great shooter and well worth the money to convert it. |

Tuned 92FS aka Fat Boy
[IMG][/IMG]
Weigand Bushing, a touch under 8lb DA trigger, ~4lbs in SA, Elite hammer, wood grips (forget which type) complete with ghetto non-skid tape, and D hammer spring. Clipped a handful of .38 Special empties at 15yds a few months back with relative ease (from bench and bags, of course). Will post pics of the OttoComp BHP when I get new pics taken. -Lucky

Nice DE rembrandt
If only I had 4000.00 + dollars of expendable income, I would've probably jump in a hurry for the wicked set up and contrasting slide/ frame.... EXTENDED CANNON LIKE BARREL!...jesus I'd sling that thing on me, walking through deepest of forests feeling immortal and probably laughing at the site of a beast.
Its like croc dundee except -" thats not a gun......... always loved the hefty looks of the DE,... whats the caliber-.50ae, 44m, ..? Last edited by m_liebst; June 18, 2011 at 08:48 PM. |
