Wheel gunner looking for a semi

I am a traditional S&W revolver guy. I have had a few semi autos in my day. Colt Series 70 1911, Colt Government Series 80 380, HK USP 40, HK USP45, and a Springfield XDs 45. I just can't find a semi that I love as much as my revolvers. I think I prefer a 45acp in semiautos. I don't feel comfortable carrying my snubby 38s as a CCW. Not that I don't think it has the power or the round cap. Just, I'm a big guy and feel like I'm printing all the time. I did like the XDs, I should have kept it and gave it a while to grow on me. Any thing come to mind that I should try out? I know, Glock, all my friends have them and they are nice, but too bulky for me.

Get another XDs. Coupla 7 rounders and a coupla 5 rounders. Good to go.

I'm a revolver guy also and my SIG P250 or Kahr CW45 would work for you. Both are DAO pistols with excellent trigger pulls for folks like us who are comfortable with shooting revolvers.

Idaho Spud, yes I am thinking of the XDs again but I never like the 7rd mag. Two or three 5rds would be fine. I've never had a 9 before and don't plan on it. I like the smooth recoil of a 45acp, I am limited to that. Before anyone says it, I'm not in the market for a $950 Kimber or Wilson Combat.
Damn it!! I guess I'm getting another XDs.

Try a lot of different autos then when you get tired get a Glock and you'll be set for life.

Well the Glock 36 and the Kahr CW45 are very similar in all respects and are about the lightest single-stack .45s around... 22 oz. range.

Either of them float your boat?

Itty-bittier 5+1 is the Kahr PM45 at 20 oz.

If you'd rather have hammer-fired metal, the Bersa Thunder ain't bad... 27oz.

I just got a Kahr CM9 and I will say the trigger pull is very revolver like, but a little lighter. 7 lbs or so and very smooth.

Have you considered the XDm compact .45 model? I see a few online listings ~$750, so it's a little above your price range, but:
.45acp
9 round mag
13 round mag (w/ extension)
27 oz unloaded (w/ flush mag)

i'm a big guy too. anything double stack is going to feel like it's printing to you. unfortunately, the only thing i've found in the right size in 45 is the xds.

I'm back in on the XDs train. I did like the gun, I need to start carrying more often. I'll have to sell a revolver to finance this. I have a S&W 686 no dash 1983 4" I can part with. That should bring enough for the XDs and a box of ammo or two.

Seems like the right move for you. The XDs are safer than the glocks but not as good as an MP with a safety.

Seems odd a wheelgun does not go for the DA/SA, but you have tried them and if an HK does not suit you then none would seem to.

I like the Wheelguns. I carry a 642 or an LC9. Strange but I shoot better rapid fire with the LC, crap trigger and all. If we had open carry I'd carry a model 19 or 15 or a 1911.

I got an XDs last month and I'm favorably impressed with the little thing.

I'm a da/sa guy, but am not a fan of polymer triggers as they tend to flex ala my usp45 compact and fnp 45. Something about when metal wears on metal that can not be duplicated in feel by poly lowers and triggers. I'm not a revolver guy but imagine that this is why they like them. A well broken in Sig, Beretta, or 3rd gen s&w auto can't be matched on the buttery pull of the trigger.

Just my opinion but you should at least try the trigger on one of the above before writing off tda, thinking that H&K is the only show in town.

I like revolvers too,

The first thing is to decide what features you like.
Polymer or Steel.
Hammer or Striker.
Single action with a thumb safety or double action first shot or one of the compromise trigger systems like Glock or XD?

Then you can make a good decision.

Reliability is actually about the same for everything except the real cheapos.
They are all pretty reliable but all can malfunction sometimes, even revolvers.

Personally after 1911s and revolvers I prefer the CZ and M&P. The CZ is a great steel hammer fired DA/SA duty style gun. The M&P is lighter being poly, and has a decent trigger due to the thumb safety. They both shoot well.

Revolvers do feel good, substantial. Too get that " feel " in a semi try a SA TRP or Para Black Ops .
