Have tried Red Dot, HS-6 and Titegroup.
Titegroup gets it done for me. Clean and accurate. HS-6 and Red Dot were good but TG was just a step above them. |

Without going into the basement to get my reloading log, I think KnobCreek and I are using the exact same load of 5.4gr W231.

I use HP-38, but I would think any of the powders listed for .40 S&W would work. We're not talking keyholes at 100 yards are we?

I use WST and 180gr bullets. I believe the charge is 4.2gr, but, don't quote me on that. I'd have to check that. I'm working on some new 9mm loads and I'm running low on ram!

DISCLAIMER-The following is for informational purposes only and I hold no responsibility for actual use!
My favorite .40 S&W "target/plinking" load right now is 6.0gr of Unique behind a 155gr Berry's plated bullet. I've fired several thousand of these loads over the past couple of years and the pressure is just high enough to get a good burn from the Unique. If you want a hotter .40 S&W load I've used 10.0gr of Blue Dot behind a 155gr Hornady XTP (Hornady #40000) but BE CAREFUL that your metering is accurate on this one.

Universal for the plinkers, and Blue Dot when I want more oomph. I load 5.5 grains of Universal under a 155 grain Rainier, and use 8.5 grains of Blue Dot under a 180 grain Remington JHP.

.40 loads

Another thing to watch, is your selection of components. It can cause the results to vary widely. Hornady used to list 12.0 gr. Blue Dot, and 1200 fps for their 155 XTP. Substitute a Win. Silvertip, same weight, and your pressures change radically. Using several other 155 gr. jacketed bullets, the top load often ends up down around 10.0 gr. And that depends on your lot of powder! Bottom line: be very careful. Its a great round, but like many others, when near the max., you'll want to pay close attention to component choices. NO CASUAL SUBSTITUTIONS! |

I just started working up loads for .40 a couple of months ago for an SA XD40. I tried Power Pistol first with 150gr Noslers and 165gr Xtreme plated bullets. Results were disappointing. Accurate #5 worked better with the Xtreme bullets. The Noslers were still not good.
I've got some more test rounds loaded up with Blue Dot and Zip with more Xtreme 165 gr and Montana Gold bullets. Hopefully I'll get to the range some time this week.

Vihtavuori N340 out of a Sig 226 X-Five Competition.
Exceptionally clean burning, good velocity, great accuracy and no flash. L8r, Michael |
