Rock Island XTM-22 (.22 WMR)

My LGS finally found me one of these at a normal price. Most listed on GB are selling for $100 over MSRP!

I have two more mags coming as well, so next week it's off to the range to see how well it runs and shoots.

If it turns out to be a keeper, the hammer/sear will get a massage... along with some new grips...

Great, out of the realm of vaporware where it has hidden for some time since announcement.

Good luck on the new grips. Are you aware that the .22 Magnum round is longer than .45 ACP, so this pistol has a different receive with a mag well that's longer front-to-back than other 1911s? Standard grips may go on, but they won't look right. If you want to do it -- try before you buy.

I want one of those, but I still wonder if the .22 Magnum might have enough Moxie to operate a standard slide rather than needing to carve off the top like they do for their .22 LR model.

It looks like it has standard grips. See the wide flat in front of the panel.

You may be right, but the old Springfield Armory and Auto-Ordnance 1911s looked like that, too. They had an incorrect radius on the front strap.

It looks like they've taken quite a bit of metal off the top and side of the slide, looks to be way more proportionally than BERSA did with their BT22.

There IS no "top of the slide", it is cut away to expose the barrel.

I see now, google image yielded some clearer pictures, I must have misunderstood White Eagle's post.

I'm aware of the wider flats and squarish front strap on this frame, but I think a pair of black grips with some grip tape on the front strap will blend in OK.

I'm simply not a fan of rubber grips.

My point was that I don't like the slide with half the slide removed. I understand that they had to do that for the .22 LR pistols, because they didn't want to use an aluminum alloy slide, but the .22 Magnum has enough energy beyond the .22 LR that I think they might have been able to make a full slide work.

Imbel, the Brazilian company that until recently made Springfield Armory's 1911s, has a .380 ACP 1911 in Brazil that operates on direct blowback and has a full, steel slide. Since the .22 Magnum develops more muzzle energy than .380 ACP, I think it could work.

They are using a floating chamber which they call "delayed blowback."
Which is strange because the Colt floating chamber is to increase recoil to get .22lr to cycle a slide that big, even with lightening cuts.

Engineers are funny folks...

My Kimber in .17HM2 had a full size steel slide, but then again the slide on this Rock Island seems to have more mass than the slide on the Kel-Tec PMR30, while the slide on my old 4" AMT Automag was probably somewhere in between.

Please report back after the range trip. I have been interested in that pistol since I saw the announcement. It will be interesting to hear how it runs. I have an Excel Arms Accelerator pistol in WMR, and it runs well... I am hoping the RIA XTM-22 runs well also, If so... I will pick one up.

Be interesting if it shoots well and sells well.
The first whine at the sight of the Kel Tec .22 WRM was "I'd buy one if it was a Long Rifle."
Well, RIA is showing that, too.

Finally made it to the range!

The pistol ran almost perfectly, no failures to fire, feed or extract. The slide stop movement is a bit sticky, so slide didn't lock back every time, but that will be an easy fix (polish face of side stop and tip of plunger). All three magazines worked great.

Only used two types of ammo today, CCI Maxi Mag 40gr JHP and Fiocchi 40gr JSP. Best accuracy was from the Fiocchi, easy 1" (10 shot) groups at 20 yards. CCI was only slightly larger. Both shot to point of aim, which surprised and pleased me!

I changed grips before the range, had these from Strike Fire in my parts bin, and like them better than the rubber that came on it.

Oh, so this is not their proprietary .22 mag/9mm combo. This is .22 WMR. I didn’t realize that at first. OP could you say why you didn’t want the other .22 mag? You would have gotten 9mm too. Just wondering.

How many rounds do the detachable box magazines (i.e. NOT clips) hold?

Magazines are 14 round capacity.

The "other .22 Magnum" is the .22 TCM, a bottle-necked center fire cartridge, yes?

Well, I simply like the rimfire round for certain uses, and already have plenty of 9mms.

Having had the 22TCM/9mm combo, I’d lean more towards this 22 Mag if I wanted something like that again.

The 22TCM is a giggle but pricey. I enjoyed mine while I had it, but .36/round with online pricing makes it hard to justify for what it is. Mine also had tolerable accuracy at best, seemed to be a QC issue on the ammo side as some boxes would do better than others.

Slide stop problem was a fairly deep dimple combined with a really stiff spring. Engagement with the magazine follower was good, but the magazine spring just wasn't stout enough to push the slide stop up every time.

Sanded down the face of the slide stop just a wee bit, broke the bottom edge of the dimple with a needle file (touched it up with a bit of cold blue) and took one coil off the plunger spring.

Now locks open every time when hand-cycling... I expect the same when I get it out to shoot some more.

It came with a fiber-optic front sight, fixed notch rear.
