messing around with that tanerite stuff anyone else expiriement ???

so I have my own 300 yard rifle range, & just for kicks, I've bought a couple of the small jars of this stuff... quite impressive, if hit with enough cartridge...

well... I have tons of old perscription pill bottles... the larger ones I can re-use for other things, but the littlest ones I now have a grocery bag full of them... thinking about mixing up a bigger jar, & transfering to many little pill jars...

so... only having shot a couple, & having given away a couple, I've had mixed results... only tried my 22 Hornet once, & didn't get a boom ( put the jar on a 55 gallon drum ( my normal target backers ) & hit the rim of the barrel before I hit the jar... so may not have had enough energy ) my buddy followed up a shot with a 22-250 & got the desired effect

so has anyone tried shooting these with a handgun... is a 9mm enough energy or velocity to set one off... 357 magnum ??? right now I'm unsure if it's energy or velocity that sets them off ???

it would be nice if a 22 LR would set them off... I've thought about grinding up the beads on a couple ( before mixing ) to see if they would be more or less or unchanged as far as sensitivity

would be nice if they could be modified to work off a 22 LR & I could pour a small jar into 4-5 of my small pill jars for use with the 22

anyone out there expiriemented with this stuff ??? minimum cartridge that gets the desired effect ???

Hope you're not mixing & then giving it away or transporting off your shooting site.

Son-in-law plays with it, we've exploded dead trees & a couple computers (the parts of which are a bother to pick up).
Transporting in a mixed state is illegal.

We used .223 & 7.62x39, have not dropped any lower.

nope... I don't mix it till it's ready to use... wouldn't expirement with crushing up the beads more, after it's mixed... everything before mixing...

re-read my 1st post... no... I haven't transfered any to the small pill bottles yet... just thinking about doing that for next summer & maybe for use with 22 LR, if I can figure out a way to make them pop with a lighter cartridge

I read your post three times before I did mine.
Glad you know about the pre vs post mix situation.
Many people don't.

I've had fun with acetylene filled balloons. Flash and some bang.

i've done quite a bit of tannerite myself. I wouldn't mix the Al powder and the ammonium nitrate until I got to the range, if I were you. I think you're taking a chance mixing it beforehand, you don't want this stuff going off in the car. Very simple to carry separate containers and mix it on site.

.22lr, 9mm, and .45acp won't set it off... not enough zip. Takes something with a velocity with about 2000 fps to do the job, not sure what the minimum bullet weight needs to be.

We buy it in 40# lots. Mix it and put in baggies with duct tape wrapped around it. Any size can be mixed this way. From what I've read the mixture or a large part must be accelerated to supersonic speeds to detonate.

There is another mixture Tannerite sells that a .22 will set off. Size wise it seems a lot more powerful than the original. I taped on to a two by four and it split the board into.

You need 2000+ fps to set off tannerite.

Be careful with that stuff. If you mix it and transport it you are transporting explosives with out a license. If you hurt someone with it you ruin it for the rest of us.

One of the TFL moderators had some fun with Tannerite... seems like he said they kept getting bigger and bigger until the neighbors got mad.... something along those lines.... don't remember which Mod it was... maybe he'll be in to share.

In most places (maybe Federally) it's illegal to transport Tannerite mixed.

Did you know that you should not mix it and then transport it? Just wanted to make sure.
