my understanding is that retirement pay is based on your rank in the military and number of years served. my brother isn't getting rich from his military pension but it's enough to support his family, which he had to do when he retired. he served 20 yrs.

as for medical care, I don't know the specifics of my brother's medical insurance policy as far as what care is provided but I do know he's paying waaaaaay less than what I pay, and he gets it for life. is that a lot? you be the judge

Army MP Corps '87-'94. Reserves Quatermaster Corps '98-'04. OIF I&II, was part of those involuntary extension folks. Saw the most wonderous things, from diving on a place called Johnston Atoll (Donovans Reef), Pacific sunsets, quiet Kentucky snowfalls. The sunrises in the valley west of Khan al Baghdadi were amazing and walking the ancient streets of Ur and climbing the Ziggurat which was built by the Mesopotamians over 3500 yrs ago really makes a guy study his place in this old world.

Army, 18 months in Nam then returned as a DI at the jungle warfare school at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Served in Dung-ha, Hue, Laos and Cambodia. Laos and Cambodia were classified operations then but seems everyone knows about it now.

One of the things in life of which I am most proud. Never saw combat as many of you have, but was available in a support role had the need arose. Proud to be a Vet, combat duty or not.

No, and one of the very few things in life for which I remain ashamed. (For pretty much everything else I've been able to make amends.)

The Viet Nam war ended just a few months before I would have been drafted and all I could think of was 'Whew, I don't have to go.' I never looked back until I had matured a bit more and had some understanding of civic duty. (At least now it angers me when I hear someone laughing about dodging jury duty and I can kindly remind them of 'duty'.) I tried to enlist in the Reserves, but by then I was too old. Later I found that the age limit had been increased and I could have enlisted, but by the time I found out it had been reduced again. I watch now and if the age limit is ever relaxed again then I'll do what it takes to get in. I'm blessed that I have a wife that understands and supports this decision. We both try to serve our country in other ways, but neither of us is under the delusion that it is the same as military service.

Please let me offer a very sincere thank you to all of you that have served.
