Saboted pistol bullets at rifle velocities....

Was sighting in my new T/C Impact yesterday. I'm using MMP sabots around 230 gr lead round nose bullets. Now that I'm in the neighborhood I was figuring on fine tuning with 250 gr. XTP's. Then it struck me that I'd be pushing a bullet designed to travel at 800-900 fps pushing 1800 fps+ (running 2050 fps with the 230). What will it do on impact with a White Tail. So I'm thinking 45-70 bullets but they certainly are pricey.

My question, how does the XTP perform at high velocities?

Exellent bullet......have taken more than a couple of deer & hogs with them out of a .44 Contender.

I would be surprised if you needed to go to the 45-70 bullets to make them hold together.

you have no reason to worry. those bullets are high velocity bullets. they hold up extremely well. even the ligh weight 44 mag ones do.

just dont try to use short barrel / low velocity gold dots.

Well, according to Hornady, they are designed for velocities up to 1600fps. IMHO, that's not really high velocity.

You'll get far better long-range ballistics out of the Hornady SSTs. I've shot them for a few years now and they are very accurate.

Can you point me to a .451, .452, .458 SST? Coming up empty on Hornady's site. Use 'em with my .270 but not sure that's what I'm looking for in my 50 cal muzzle loader. What I have found is a .452 250gr FTX. Might be just the ticket.

No, actually the 240 gr XTP mag looks like the thing....

Cascade, what about Horndady item number 67273 ? That is the 50/45 250grn SST muzzleloader. That is the one that I was talking about. It was deadly accurate in my Omega and seems to be just as good through my Encore. Unfortunately, the Hornady site doesn't give the exact diameter.

Cascade,I just found on Hornady's site that those SSTs are .452. Looks like just what you are looking for. Incidentally, those are the exact same thing as the T/C Shockwave bullets but with a red tip instead of yellow. Hornady makes the Shockwaves for T/C but T/C likes to charge a premium price for them.

Been shooting 250 HP/XTP .452 @2100 fps for years. Never had one come apart. Never had to shoot anything past 140 yards yet, but at that range nothing moves out of it's tracks with a good shot.
Taken lots of deer and hogs with them, and for the most part I always get pass through shots on the deer, so I have not recovered the slug in any of the deer. I did take a between the eyes shot on a hog, that left the bullet inside of the animal, and even after going through the bones in the head, it was still in good
shape.
