What caliber is it?
I have a Universal Carbine that was given to me, from reading I have discovered that it is a second generation. Problem is the only markings are the serial number, name brand, and city. Does not list what caliber it is, from my reading it would be a 30 Carbine but is there a way to know without putting a mic on it?
Thanks for any help. |

Does a carbine magazine fit in and lock properly?
Does the bullet of a carbine round pretty-much fit into the muzzle? Does a carbine round chamber and extract? |

Google .22 Spitfire, 5.7 Johnson Spitfire; necked-down .30 Carbine.

"...some .256 mag..." Nope. It's .30 Carbine. Only Early models came in .256 Win Mag. That'd be really obvious if it was a .25 calibre too. None were manufactured in Jacksonville, AR.
The worst thing about Late Model Universal is that no issue parts other than sights and mags will fit. None of the internal parts are the same as issue parts. The only place to get parts is from Gunparts who bought all remaining parts when IJ closed. Anyway, this is the best Carbine site on the Net. Covers all the commercial variations too. This is the Universal page. http://www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_universal.html

From the data on M1 Carbines Inc, you should be able to cross reference the serial number to the caliber. |
