45acp SMALL primer loads
Anybody have some load data for 45acp with SMALL primers?
I have thousands of 45 cases that I throw away (well....scrap) because I can't load them. Is there any load data out there for small primers? It'd be a whole lot easier if I could load those as well. Ike |

BT, 3/4/13
I always wondered if there was any difference in the velocities of the Small-primer and Large-primer rounds. I compared two sets of .45 reloads with 230 grain cast lead bullets. They were loaded on the same machine, a Dillon SDB, with 5.8 grains of W-231. The Small-primer cases were all Federal, the Large-primer cases a mixed lot of RP, Winchester and Magtech. The SP and LP primers were both Winchester. The pistol was a Sig 220 in Stainless with a 4 and 3/8" barrel. Small primer velocities average were 833 feet/second. Large primer velocities were 832 feet/second. Thus with my small sample size of five cases each there was no real difference between velocities of the SP and LP primed cases. As with all reloading data start low and be careful. best wishes- oldandslow |

I started 10 % below regular load and by the time i was done,I was right back to my normal load. No difference. Now I do not chrony my pistol loads, but all else was the same.

There could be a few fps difference depending on the powder you use. I just use the same load for both. No need to toss good brass in my opinion. On paper targets it looks the same to me.

I have over 1000 of the NT small primer 45's along with a 1000 Winchester Small Pistol Magnum Primers I purchased in error.
Just dropped my usual load 10% (was a very light load to begin with) and have had no issues, cycles well, accuracy just as good. Wouldn't think there would be any issue with using a standard small pistol primer and your normal load. |

Sweet. Now I can get some use out of that bucket of 45 small primers I have. It's gonna be a little hassle to keep them seperated but It gives me a lot more brass to load!

Another option I have, and you might also, is someone on a local board trading his large primer for your small. Couple guys here doing it so they don't have to switch the primer part of their re-loaders when switching from 9 to 45.
