Funk on brass?

I've been noticing some funky blackish marks on my rifle brass when I retrieve it from my brass tumbler. They kind of look like smug marks. If I get a rag and some brasso, it will come off with a good bit of rubbing, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what this is? Thanks!

Don't know what they are, but whatever you do, keep all ammonia products (Brasso included) away from your brass, link. Try using #0000 fine steel wool instead if these blemishes bother you too much.

I got the same marks when I used too much polish on my media (I was adding polish to every batch) and did not run the tumbler long enough to distribute evenly.

Now, I add capful of polish every 2-3 batches and run the tumbler long enough so I do not see any clumps (usually 3-5 minutes) before adding cases. No more black marks.
