UMC Remington Ammo 45acp (Cheap and Reliable)
I bought 250 rds 45acp 230gr. FMJ bulk pack of Remington UMC ammo @ Gander Mountain for $139.00 + tax. I have heard that its dirty and a lot of smoke. I experienced none of that. It was not any dirtier than other brands I have shot and the smoke was minimal. After shooting 150rds, my 1911 functioned flawlessly. I would recommend it to anybody that wants an inexpensive range load for practice.

I also shoot the Remington UMC Yellow box in 9MM. I actually find it to be cleaner than most ammo and very well performing. I would also recommend this ammo (in 9MM at least) to anyone and everyone.

I think the Remington .45 has improved at some point in the last few years. When I last tried it, it was smokey as heck and seemed very mildly loaded. I picked up a few boxes recently as it was all that the store had, and it's fine. About the same amount of smoke that you expect from any cheap .45 ball, and it seemed to be loaded stoutly. Recoil is about like Fiocchi, which is on the hotter end of the spectrum. Accuracy was average for the guns I was shooting it in.
New-production Remington ball gets the thumbs-up from me.

I've been please with all the UMC ammo. In fact, some of my older non-JHP shooters (P1/38/5/6) actually like the 115 gr JHP they make.

I've broken in a couple new pistols with UMC ammo and have been happy with it.

The UMC stuff I've been using in the last 2-3 years have been much better than the stuff I remember in the late '80s. Definitely cleaner than WWB and shoots about good as anything from Federal, CCI, etc.. I picked up a 250ct box from WW myself last month. Was surprised to see two boxes of it on the shelf for 84.95.

I'm with the others. The UMC ammo has been good for me to use. I haven't noticed it being any dirtier than similar ammo. And, even if it is a bit more dirty, I would take care of that in normal cleaning anyway.

I've used the UMC Rem in .45ACP. No problems. It's certainly no dirtier than my Bullseye handloads.
Lots of people hate the Remington Golden Bullet .22LR as well, but my 10/22 likes 'em just fine.

I'm not trying to be rude, or stir it up, but is 250 rounds for $140 not really a great deal?
Theres a place nearby that has .45 Winchester white box bricks (100rds, right?) for $38ea - they got a whole pallet of the stuff. I've also been finding it at WalMart occasionally for ~$43, which would come to about $130 for 300 rounds. fwiw... I kinda recall the Winchester bulk is the smoky stuff you might be thinking of? Been awhile since I've shot it though... |

I've found the UMC to be on a par with WWB. Very average.
Both seem rather dirty and a bit underpowered, YMMV. I've shot it in 9mm and .45 acp.
