Promoted to the Rank of Brush Gun 1st Class
In my previous thread I converted a 300aac pistol into a carbine with a 16” barrel.
What I should have predicted is that with the pistol length gas system and a 16” barrel there could be some feed issues. Well, guess what? The carbine had some double-feeds using supersonics. So I figured that this gun is probably over gassed. I ordered some tungsten buffer weights and to be safe a bleed-off adjustable gas block. After some redneck calculations (just took a stab), I installed two tungsten weights in the buffer; making it an H2 I think. And off to the woods I went. The gun fed everything perfectly, subs, supers and a mix of subs and supers in the same mags too. I fired FMJ, open tips, polymer tips hollow points perfectly. I also splurged on a spendy (to me at least) holographic sight from Vortex. Added a QD sling as well. I absolutely love the holographic sight. Most of my property is very dense forest in deep East Texas, so I won’t be taking any long shots. I will save the adjustable gas block for some other project, or I might put it on this gun, who knows. I ran several magazines through this gun after work today and it’s is cycling flawlessly now with the heavier buffer. I like this setup enough, and I am confident with the gun now to carry it into the woods full time. Edit to add: The only issue is my offset Sure Fire light mount won’t work with a mailbox on the rail, so I’ll need to find something different. ![]() This is what most of my property looks like. There’s a spring fed creek 20ft away and you can’t even see it. ![]() ![]() And I still need to deal with this fella… ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by rickyrick; May 19, 2023 at 06:03 PM. |

Congrats on getting it sorted out.
I built my .300 carbine with a CMMG barrel because it is carbine gas and gets a regular diet of super-sonic Ammo. I've never had an issue. My 10.5" SBR is Carbine gas as well, but I use a silencer on it and it has an H1 buffer.

Nice--bonus is you don't have to worry about the SBR police now.

Yeah I noticed that cmmg seems to be one of the only suppliers with carbine gassed 300aac barrels.

I jumped on the 300 BO bandwagon when it first came out (and it was still being called whisper by some folks)--an interesting novelty at the time but ballistically doesn't really interest me.

Yeah, I didn’t really see much usefulness of the cartridge back when I first put the pistol together. I wanted to try it, the only different component needed was the barrel and the ammunition was widely available and cheapish.
Now that I converted the gun I got to liking it. It won’t be used for long range; in fact, I had to machete my way to the spot I was shooting and took the above pictures. Basically I’ve found a use for it. My machete back near the house: ![]() Last edited by rickyrick; May 20, 2023 at 06:49 AM. |

I still have the case cutter and little crow case trimmer/neck turner--and the pistol barrel which I guess I either have to sell or destroy to be really safe. My 300 BO pistol was reincarnated to a fast twist 223 Wylde rifle--far more useful for me.

My decision made to retain the caliber was based on the simple fact that I have thousands of rounds of 300aac from my ammunition hoarding days, hahaha. It will be a long long time before I run out of 300aac and I will never ever run out of .223. I have 3 five gallon buckets packed full of loose 9mm. Some amounts of other calibers and shotgun shells. Was not fun to move this stuff back to Texas from Washington state.
Had I not had so much of the ammo already, I might have went another route.

Stealing a line from George Peppard, "don't you just love it when a plan comes together?"
Looks like a nice firearm suited for just what you want it to do. Congratulations. |

Up until this gun was reborn I toted this regular ole m4’gery upper into the woods coupled with a lower that I like to mix and match with other uppers. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Third and final iteration:
The short tube combined with the snazzy holographic sight would not allow for the mounting of the original surefire light. I have a 6.8 upper that I assembled a few years back that just keeps short-stroking. (I’m convinced the gas port is too small). Anyway, I robbed the AeroPrecision keymod furniture from the 6.8. The handguard is actually much lighter than the solid YHM tube. I also went ahead an installed the AR10 compensator, because it does help prevent a mud plug in some instances. I may still install another stock and grip at some point, these were just in the parts box with the others. It’s ok with the plain-Janes ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I like your setup. I've gotten tired of toting any kind of slung weapon and instead carry either a S&W 686 (4") or 629 (4") hammer thong on a field holster. Snakes to hogs I'm covered. Now ATV/UTV I either carry a standard 16" M4 or even a bolt .22WMR.
Your land reminds me somewhat of mine here in SE Tx. And if you like machetes I'll suggest you try Ontario Knife Company's CT5 22" and not off their website but try Amazon and get it for 1/2 of their listed price. I buy them at a military surplus store in Beaumont but they are by far the best machete I've ever used (I have 4 of them.) Nice thread. |

I've been thinking about buying another upper and doing something similar. Due to where, and how, I hunt it wouldn't be something I'd use a lot. But having the option would be nice.
I have a 16" AR chambered in 223/5.56 with 1-4X scopes (2 actually) that I've used a few times in the past and it worked fine. If I were to buy a 2nd upper for I'm not 100% sure which way I'd go but am leaning towards 350 Legend at the moment.

I have that Ontario machete that you mentioned, I keep meaning to re-shape the grip on it. I have another project in the works, AR wise. The barrel should be here tomorrow. I don’t plan on taking any deer, unless I get a need for food. Just another picture showing some of the terrain. We have giant oaks, pine sweet gums and more thorny vines. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
