Objective Size/Glass Quality Tradeoffs for High Power Rifle Spotting Scopes

Afternoon Gents,

Wanted to tap the collective wisdom here. Getting into the high power rifle game with plans to shoot service rifle in 5.56 @ ranges from 200-600 yards. No PALMA for me yet.

Have been researching spotting scopes and the prevailing opinion seems to be that you get what you pay for, and Kowa spotters are top of the line. I’ll have between $800-1,200 to spend on a spotting scope sometime in the next couple of months.

Two options I’m considering at the moment are:

Kowa TSN-663 $824.95
Case $64.95

Kowa TSN-82SV $630.00
Case $119.00

Both with:
Kowa - TSE-17HD 25x Long Eye Relief Spotting Scope Eyepiece $229.95

All in:
$ 1,119.85 for the 663 or $ 978.95 or 82SV

The 663 has a 66mm objective and uses extra low dispersion lenses (2.29 lbs)
The 82SV has a 82mm objective and utilizes traditional lens material (3.26 lbs)

My core question is this:
What are the trade off between the objective size and low dispersion lenses?

For my application, am I better off with a larger objective with lower quality glass or a smaller objective with top of the line glass?

With these two set ups will there be any practical difference in terms of my ability to see the target and adequate detail in mirage?

Thanks for the help.

If you're not shooting in low light conditions, a bigger objective doesn't help much

For a spotter you need clarity and resolution more than "light gathering" ability
